Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race – Stage 1 Lake Tahoe May 2016

Calling all bike riding fans the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race – Stage 1 Lake Tahoe May 2016 will happen on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

I was lucky enough to watch the first Stage of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race on the West Shore of Tahoe City here in Lake Tahoe last year and it was amazing!

I was just down the road from the 50km mark in the Tahoe Park neighborhood which is known for having the Sunnyside Resort, FireSign Café and the new West Shore Market businesses.

These are world-class athletes, and watching them ride by was more than just impressive, it was inspiring.

I can see why the crowds turn out for the Tour de France event each year and line the streets for just a peek at the cyclists as they zoom past you, because they really do zoom past you. You just can’t imagine just how fast these women were moving today until you are standing there and watch them race by.

Here’s a video of Stage I of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe from last year which was taken about 2.5 mile south of Downtown Tahoe City just about at the half-way mark of this first leg in their four stage race.

The Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race will begin tomorrow starting at Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe. The race route will cover seventy-four (74) miles racing around the perimeter of Lake Tahoe riding in both California and in Nevada and they will end up where they started, back at the base of the Heavenly ski resort in South Lake Tahoe.

The race route for Stage 1 is as follows:

All race times are approximate, so be early so you don’t miss out see any of the women race by!

STAGE 1 – Friday, May 8, 2015 – Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort – South Lake Tahoe, California

Start Time: 11:00 a.m.

Elevation Change: 5,300 feet (remember they are starting at over 6,200+ feet in elevation above sea level)

Total Miles: 74.5 miles | Kilometers: 120 km

Heavenly California Base 10:50 a.m. Start

At Tahoe Blvd. / US Hwy 50 11:10 – 11:12 a.m. (The “Y” in South Lake Tahoe)

US Hwy 50 / CA Hwy 89 South 11:05 a.m. (South Lake Tahoe)

Camp Richardson 11:11 a.m. (South Lake Tahoe)

Tahoma 11:51 p.m. (West Shore Lake Tahoe)

CA 89 South and CA 28 Tahoe City 12:13 (The “Wye” in Tahoe City – Downtown TC)

Kings Beach 12:35 p.m. (North Shore Lake Tahoe – Downtown KB)

Incline Village / Lakeshore Blvd 12:46 p.m. (East Shore Lake Tahoe – Downtown IV)

Spooner Summit 1:19 p.m. (East Shore Lake Tahoe)

Stateline NV / Lake Parkway 1:49 p.m. (South Lake Tahoe – Downtown SLT)

Hwy 50 and Pioneer Trail 1:52 p.m. (South Lake Tahoe)

Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd 1:54 p.m.

It will be very easy for you to view the race if you stand/sit along any where along CA Hwy 89 South, CA HWY 28, NV Hwy 28, or NV Hwy 50.

The Race Festival will be at the Heavenly Resort and will start at 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. where the racers will star and finish Stage 1.

Lake Tahoe is known for its amazing winter sports and our Olympic athletes, but we are also known for our beautiful Lake Tahoe, and our great boating and lake activities. Hopefully the Amgen race will remind everyone what a great place Lake Tahoe is to ride your bike, whether you are a professional like these Amgen women racers, or an amateur like myself who just enjoys being out on our local paved bike paths!

If you’ll be in the South Lake Tahoe area, tomorrow, you’ll also get a chance to see the Amgen Tour Men come into South Lake Tahoe. Watch for riders to come into the area on Hwy 89 and Portal Drive between 3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Be sure to check out the Amgen website for more detailed information!
