The Big Blue Bayou is one of the largest fund raisers for the Sierra Senior Services Meals on Wheels program.  This evening of fun will feature a Cajon Style dinner,  cooking demonstrations, an auction, live music by the Blues Monsters in a wonderful outdoor setting at the Martis Camp Lookout Lodge in the luxury gated community of Martis Camp in Truckee, CA just north of the Northstar Ski Resort area.

If you’re looking for a reason to have a fun evening out and a chance to enjoy the wonderful Tahoe fall weather this weekend and experience the beautiful  Martis Camp Lookout Lodge facilities that are nestled at the base of the mountains between the Lahontan and the Schaffer’s Mill communities, then this is the event for you while supporting a great local organization.

Proceeds go to support the Sierra Senior Services programs and this event is targeting the Meals on Wheels Program.

Sierra Senior Services feeds and supports Seniors in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee Communities.  Senior Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides meals to qualified senior citizens age 60+.  While I was on their web site, www.SierraSeniors.org I learned the following:

  • Sierra Senior Services (non-profit group that oversees the Meals on Wheels program) only get 30% of their funding from the government.  That means 70% of the annual budget comes from fundraising activities and private donations.
  • In North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, California area 75% of the home delivered meal recipients live alone.
  • In Nevada County (Most of Truckee is located in Nevada County, California) 62% of the home delivered meal recipients are over the age of 80.
  • Over 88% of the home delivered meal recipients rely solely on Social Security.
  • Approximately 54% of the recipients are disabled.
  • A $75 donation will help feed a senior for a week.

If you’re curious about the Big Blue Bayou event, or if you’d just like help out the local Sierra Senior Services Center, this is a fun way to do it, or you can just give a donation to their program if you won’t be here in the area to attend this fun event.

Truckee Arts and Crafts FestivalFall is in the air here in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area and this weekend is the perfect time to check out  the Historic Downtown Truckee Arts and Crafts Festival, on Saturday, September 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Downtown Historic Truckee will be closed off to local traffic between Bridge Street and Jibboom Street on both Saturday and Sunday for the Arts and Crafts Festival.

This is your chance to not only shop the local artisans that will be here in the Tahoe area for the two-day arts and crafts festival, but a great way to shop year-around Truckee businesses that are also located along main street.

It’s not too early to start your holiday shopping now and find that unique gift for that special someone.  If you know you’ll be looking for that special piece of “Tahoe” art, crafts, and/or other items that are unique to our area to furnish your Tahoe second home, or if you know there will be someone on your gift-giving list that will really enjoy getting a gift that just reminds them of the Lake Tahoe -Truckee area, this event is a great one to go to.

Being outdoors here in September is a wonderful time of year to be here in Lake Tahoe.  Our late summer days are nice and hot with temperatures into the mid-to-high 70’s, while our evenings are definitely cooler than they were a month ago.  It’s the perfect weather combination, and what better place to enjoy your summer days than here in the Truckee –  Tahoe City area!

The Truckee Arts and Crafts Festival is sponsored by the Truckee Downtown Merchant’s Association at 530-587-3161, and the Pacific Fine Arts Festival group.

Need more reasons?  Even if you’re not a big shopper, but just want to enjoy being outside in beautiful downtown Truckee taking in the festival atmosphere, this is a fun way to do it.   You’ll find jewelry, paintings, pottery, glassware, clothing, and so much more.

You’ll also discover some great places to have breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a place to have a cool beverage and snack.

What can I say, I fall for the smell of fresh fudge, or carmel candied apples from the local candy store in downtown Truckee every time!

If you are a super-shopper don’t forget to also check out the Gourmet Marketplace at the Northstar Village on Saturday, Sept 6, 2014 from  11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 7, 2014  from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. where you’ll find a wonderful collection of gourmet and culinary vendors.

I went last year and found gingerbread pancakes (mixes), gourmet chocolates and nuts, English Curd (lemon, orange, and apple spice), along with amazing shortbread cookies, just to name of few of the taste-treats that I found at last year’s event.

The Gourmet Marketplace at the Northstar Village is part of the 29th Annual Autumn Food and Wine Festival in Northstar, which has a number of cooking demonstrations, and events (combination of fee and free events) this weekend.

If you’ll be in the greater West Shore, Homewood, Truckee, Tahoe City, or Kings Beach, North Lake Tahoe area in this weekend be sure to stop by the Truckee one of the Fine Arts and Crafts Fairs in the area.  It’s a great way to spend some time and enjoy being here in Lake Tahoe.

Fireworks in Lake TahoeIt’s Labor Day weekend and Gar Woods restaurant in Carnelian Bay is going to celebrate the unofficial end of summer and celebrate Labor Day weekend in style and with a big bang!

Don’t miss out on the Labor Day fireworks show over Lake Tahoe on Sunday evening, August 31, 2014 at Gar Woods in Carnelian Bay at 8:15 p.m.!

You may know this local lakefront restaurant for their beautiful lake view dining, or perhaps it’s the Gar Woods world-famous “Wet Woody” drink and now this well-known local business is going to celebrate the last major holiday of the summer with their 2nd Annual fireworks show in Carnelian Bay tonight!

We went last year, and it was one of the best fireworks event in the area and you don’t want to miss this one.  Get there early enough and you’ll find a good spot on the Carnelian Bay public beaches, park along the street, and bring along your lawn chairs and watch the display on the sidewalks, find a place on the Gar Woods pier, or make dinner reservations at Gar Woods at 530-546-3366 and watch the show from the restaurant!

It may seem that our Lake Tahoe summer fun is about to come to an end, but I disagree with that idea. The fall here in Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite times of the year, so get ready to have still have some late summer fun, and that starts with the Gar Wood’s fireworks display on Sunday night!

     Gar Woods Firework Spectacular – Carnelian Bay, CA

     When: Sunday, August 31, 2014 – 8:15 p.m.       

     Where:  Gar Wood’s, 5000 North Lake Blvd., Carnelian Bay, CA 96140

Best Watching Areas:  The Public Carnelian Beach Area, Gar Woods Pier, Sidewalks, or make dinner reservations at Gar Woods and watch from the restaurant!

     Cost:  FREE

Fundraiser:  Gar Woods and The Monte Foundation are hosting this event, which will benefit the North Tahoe sports programs.  During the evening the North Lake Tahoe student athletes will be selling items to raise money for the North Tahoe Sports Programs, so while the event is free, dig deep and either buy something for sale, or just make a donation!

This just one more fun thing to do here in North Lake Tahoe this weekend!

Don’t miss the fireworks at Gar Wood’s tonight, Sunday, August 31, 2014 in Carnelian Bay, California at 8:15 p.m.!

Big Band Jazz Concert, Sugar Pine Point Park, Tahoma, Aug 31, 2014If you’ll be on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe this Labor Day weekend don’t forget to check out the free, outdoor, Big Band Jazz concert at the Sugar Pine Point State Park at the Ehrman Mansion in Tahoma, California. While admission is FREE, there is a parking fee of $10 per car.

Concert goers are encouraged to bring a picnic, low-back chairs, blankets, and be prepared to have some late summer fun.

If you’ll be up in the greater Tahoma, Homewood, Tahoe City, or North Lake Tahoe area on Sunday, August 31, 2014, plan on coming out and listening to the music of CHOPS Big Band.

This Big Band Jazz Concert at the Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma, CA is a fundraiser for the West Shore Association.

The West Shore Association is a non-profit group of local businesses that promote the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. Each year the West Shore Association puts on local community events, such as the Memorial Day Lake Tahoe Opening Events weekend, the Sea Plane Splash in event in Homewood, and now the big Band Jazz in the Park event.

Here are the event details:

Big Band Jazz Concert

When: Sunday, August 31, 2014, gate open at 4 p.m. for picnics, and the concert begins at 5 p.m.

Where: Ehrman Mansion, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Tahoma, California (Lake-side for this event, along with parking.)

Cost: Free admission to the concert, but parking is $10/car (Please no pets at this event.)

Beverages: Wine will be available for purchase. (Must be 21+ or older)

Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and accepted at the event.

Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley is the place to be this Labor Day weekend, and with so many fun events lined up here will be something for everyone, starting with the annual Foam Fest at the Village at Squaw Valley on Saturday.

This craft brew festival will feature over 50 beers, live music, and you’ll be supporting a great cause – The Disabled Sports USA Far West group.

This is your chance to sample a variety of beers (unlimited beer tasting ticket), enjoy our beautiful Tahoe weather (the weather forecast for this weekend is for sunshine and day time temperatures in the upper 70’s)  and great line-up of live music at the Village at Squaw Valley this Saturday August 30, 2014.

You’ll have from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to check this fun event at the Village at Squaw Valley.  Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets, which will feature some great prizes including season Squaw Valley ski passes, lift tickets, skis, snowboards, and an assortment of winter gear.  This is a great way to support the Disabled Sports USA Far West group, so get your tickets early!   

What a great way to support a wonderful group and make a fun day out of the donation!
