Traffic Delays – Road Construction, Tahoe City – Kings Beach, CA- 2014Beginning April 1, 2014, road construction has once again begun here in the greater Tahoe City-West Shore of Lake Tahoe, and in the Downtown Kings Beach – North Shore of Lake Tahoe, California areas.

Tahoe City – West Shore Lake Tahoe Hwy 89 South: (Tahoe City Highway 89 S to Homewood, Tahoma, Meeks Bay and Rubicon Bay, CA) you can expect traffic delays all the way down the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in multiple locations this year until you hit Emerald Bay.

You’ll find them working on the road just outside of the “Y” in Tahoe City on Hwy 89 S, so it will be hard to escape hitting road construction this year.

Just outside of Tahoe City the road construction work is running Monday – Friday beginning at 2 a.m. and ending around 1 p.m. daily, excluding holidays.  This schedule is designed to minimize the traffic delays in the area downtown Tahoe City area.

You’ll find other road construction projects along the West Shore and those road construction work times will vary Monday – Friday.

This road construction work is part of a multi-year project that began in 2012 and will be completed in 2016.  Southwest Gas has begun putting in a new natural gas pipe line, along with the California Department of Transportation installation of a new storm water system along Highway 89 South.  This year’s work will begin April 1, and ends Nov 1, 2014.

Downtown Kings Beach – North Shore Hwy 28:  On the North Shore you’ll find different road construction projects all along Highway 28 from Tahoe City to Dollar Point, Carnelian Bay, Agate Bay, Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach, California.

Once you’re in the downtown Kings Beach area you’ll find that the Commercial Corridor work has begun.  The commercial core downtown Kings Beach project is scheduled in sections:

From April 1 – July 1 work will be done from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays as necessary.

From July 1 – September 7, road construction will stop in the downtown area and move into the neighborhood area known as the “Grid”, where drainage and surface improvement will be made.

Once the high-season is over, road construction will move back to the downtown area from September 7 – October 15, 2014.

You’ll find one lane in, and one lane out.

This is the first year of the Kings Beach “core development project” which covers a 1.1 mile area and is designed to convert the four-lane highway into 3 lanes.  Along with the lane conversion, additional projects include the installation of a new drainage system, and surface improvements for pedestrians and bike access with sidewalks, and street lighting.  This multi-year project began earlier this year, 2014 and will be completed in 2017.

If you’ll be traveling on the West Shore, North Shore, Tahoe City, or Kings Beach areas this year expect road construction delays Monday – Friday.  Be smart and add extra travel time (30+ minutes) this Summer and Fall to get to your Lake Tahoe destinations.  You’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and reduce the stress of the delays if you leave early and plan for delays.  Be safe everyone!

Community Rummage Sale, Rideout Center, Tahoe City, Sat., May 31, 2014It’s that time of year to start seeing great yard sales here in the greater Tahoe City area.

If you don’t want to host your own yard sale, but you do have un-wanted, un-used, or  general house-hold clutter that you’d like to get rid of and turn those items into cash, then consider selling them at the Community Rummage Sale this Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Rideout Center in the Timberland neighborhood in Tahoe City, CA.

As a seller you can rent a booth space and sell your stuff.  Booth space is only $10 and you keep 100% of your proceeds.  Vendors can drop off goods on Friday, May 30, 2014.

Buyers will get the chance to shop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, so if you’re looking for items for your home here in Tahoe, you’re interested in sprucing up your current space with something new, or if you just enjoy the hunt for treasure at a bargain price this is your chance to see many different sellers all in one spot!

Tahoe City - American FlagThe Memorial Day holiday weekend is coming to a close and I’m once again reminded of how fortunate I am to live in a country where anything is possible.

I enjoy the freedom to work, live, and play in a country that has almost no restrictions on me.  I can come, go and travel at will.  I can work as hard, or as little as I choose to.  No one requires me to do, or be in any place at any given time.

I live in a country that allows me to walk down the public streets with little fear of being hurt.  I’m not worried about being shot at, or stepping on a landmine.  My water is good, the air is clean, our food is not being rationed, and my country offers the opportunity to become the person I want to be if I’m willing to work for it.

I love living in America.   Monday, May 26, 2014 is a day to count your blessings and to remember those that have made things possible for us.

It was a beautiful weekend here in Lake Tahoe, California and I was proud to see so many American Flags out and displayed with honor.

I want to say “Thank You” to all those that have served, are serving, or plan to serve.  To the men and women who serve and protect our local communities, our states, and our country, I say “Thank You” for keeping us safe.  “Thank You” for being there.

To those families that have lost a loved one.  Your family has paid the ultimate price for the freedom and safety we all enjoy.  So on this Memorial Day, take one last moment and remember those that are no longer with us. Plastic Bag Ban in Truckee, CA, Effective June 1, 2014

Plastic Shopping Bag Ban in Truckee, CAEffective June 1, 2014, Truckee, California shoppers will no longer have the option for plastic bags at check-out at all grocery and retail establishments.

In an effort to eliminate single use plastic bags from the local environment, the town of Truckee, California will implement a new ordinance that will ban the distribution of plastic bags at check out.  This follows similar action taken by near-by neighbors in South Lake Tahoe, which implemented a ban on plastic bags on January 15, 2014.

As a shopper you’ll need to either bring your own reusable grocery/retail shopping bags, or be prepared pay 10 cents per paper recycled paper bag, or reusable bag at check-out.

Who will need to comply with the new Truckee ordinance?  All Truckee grocery and retail establishments must put the new law into effect, but restaurants are excluded, including take-out establishments and any business that receives 90+ percent of their revenue from the sale of prepared food.

There are a few other exemptions to the new Truckee ordinance besides the restaurant industry.  For example medical items/drugs, food, or merchandise that could damage, or contaminate other items when placed together in a reusable bag can still be bagged separately in plastic, so you’ll see the smaller, thinner plastic bags at the meat and vegetable/fruit areas.  You’ll find other exceptions to the new law, but where you’ll find the big impact will be when you head to the local grocery store.
