California Snow Flower, Lake Tahoe

If you’re up in the greater Lake Tahoe area in the late spring, or early summer you may come across the California Snow Flower, or California Snow Plant.

According to Wikipedia, the California Snow Flower is really the Sarcodes sanguinea and it is native to western North America from Oregon through the mountains of California to Baja California.

The California Snow Flower is a striking red flower that emerges from the snow-covered ground in early spring; but in our area tends to be a flower that emerges mid-May to mid-June most likely because of our higher elevation. The California Snow Flower seems to pop-up after we’ve had several days of rain in the early summer, or late fall.
