The Carnelian Bay area was named in 1860 when semi-precious, brown-red stones were discovered on the North Shore beaches of Lake Tahoe. Today, while treasure hunters still look for the Carnelian rocks on the beaches and in the area, Carnelian Bay is home to Garwood’s restaurant, the Sierra Boat Company, Magic Carpet miniature golf course, and the Old Post office restaurant.

The Carnelian Bay area begins approximately 3.25 miles east of Tahoe City, and ends right before Tahoe Vista on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, California. The full-time population as of the 2010 census was 524 residents.

This North Shore community is centrally located, and is close to Kings Beach and Tahoe City. Its location makes it easy to get to Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, or Homewood Ski resorts. It is close to all Lake Tahoe recreational activities such as boating, hiking, biking, tennis, golf, miniature golf, skiing, shopping, and restaurants. Carnelian Bay also has a very nice public beach area – Patton’s Landing.

Some HOA groups also offer access to a shared pier, buoy rental options, pool, and tennis courts depending on the association. Most of the homeowner associations are optional. Those properties that do have HOA memberships tend to add market value to those Carnelian Bay homes for sale and are in higher demand by buyers.
