Fresh Powder Snow in Tahoe City | Feb 22 2018
Last year we received so much snow that by mid-February reporting new, fresh, powder snow in Tahoe City was old news.
You may not remember that by mid-January 2017 we had received about 70% of our annual snow fall, about 280 inches (average annual snowfall is around 400 inches), in just a couple of weeks – a lot of snow in a very short period of time.
By the time our 2017 winter season was over, we had received over 700 inches of snow – an epic winter for so many reasons.
Fast forward to today, February 22, 2018, and with only a few smaller snow storms so far this year, it has made this winter very mild in comparison, and each new snow storms big news!
It’s exciting to let everyone know that we have received between four (4) to six (6) inches of new snow at the lake level on the West Shore of Tahoe City today, which means our mountain resorts are also getting more snow today!
It is not only welcome news for our skiers and related winter sports; it is also good news for anyone watching our California snow-pack and water-shed numbers!
Our winter fun is far from over. February and March are often our best months for our winter sports.
Don’t forget the 37th Annual Snowfest! 2018 is set to begin March 1, 2018 and will run through March 11, 2018. The timing of these recent snow storms over the past two weeks will set the stage for ten days of winter fun in March!
I will have a blog post out next week that will have the complete Snowfest! 2018 calendar and list of events, but here are some of my favorite events:
- Tahoe City Fireworks – Friday, March 2, 2018 at 7:45 p.m. at Commons Beach in downtown Tahoe City
- Snowfest Parade – Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. downtown Tahoe City
- Gar Woods 30th Annual Polar Bear Swim – Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Gar Woods in Carnelian Bay
- Fireworks at Squaw Valley – Not part of the official Snowfest calendar, but if you’ll be up here, they are having a fireworks show every Saturday this winter season. In March they will start at 7 p.m. (check their calendar to confirm time) at the Village at Squaw Valley
- Wine ‘n Ice – 8th Annual Ice Carving Competition at the Truckee River Winery Wednesday, March 7, 2018 – Truckee
- Bridge Tenders 10th Annual Ribfest – Friday, March 9, 2018 starting at 5 p.m.
- Kings Beach Parade – Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. downtown Kings Beach
- River Run’s Snow Sculpture – Sunday, March 11, 2018 starting at 12 noon, junction of Hwy 89S and turn-off to Alpine Meadows
Today’s new snow is just a reminder that our winter season is far from over and Snowfest! is right around the corner.
If you haven’t been up to the greater Tahoe City – Truckee area to enjoy some of our winter fun, now is the time to plan a trip.
