Happy Chinese New Year – 2015!
Today, Thursday, February 19, 2015 is the beginning of the Chinese New Year for 2015!
Happy Chinese New Year – 2015!
While globally we all welcomed in the calendar New Year for 2015 about 50 days ago (including Jan 1), today is the beginning of the “Lunar New Year” and the year of the “Goat”.
Many may not know that the Chinese New Year begins sometime between January 21 – February 20 each year, and the changing date depends on the day of the new moon, when the moon is at its darkest, which in 2015, is today!
There are many things that people will do to celebrate today including fireworks, family gatherings, family meals, giving red envelopes with a gift inside (typically money), decorating in red, and hanging red lanterns!
I’ve always known that red was a power color, and the symbol color of love, but as I read on-line about the different articles about the Chinese New Year, and their centuries old myths and traditions, I learned that red was a not only a power color, it was a color that was believed to protect, and with that protection came good luck, fortune, and safety.
I have know jewelers that specifically weave in a red ruby, or red colored stone into their designs, and until today, I never really understood the significance of why they did that, but now after learning more about the Chinese New Year and their traditions, I have a better understanding of the goal of adding that special design element, and what it should bring to the person wearing that item.
In addition to learning more about the power color red, and the good fortune it can bring, I also read about one of the most popular and more well-known features of the Chinese New Year, which are the animal zodiac signs, which coincide with the Chinese year in which you are born.
These signs are different than the calendar year astrology signs, so if you don’t like your calendar zodiac sign check out your Chinese New Year animal. For those born between February 21, 2015 – February 7, 2016 you’ll be born in the year of the “Goat”. Last year was the Horse, next year will be the Monkey.
2014 – Horse
2015 – Goat
2016 – Monkey
2017 – Rooster
2018 – Dog
2019 – Pig
2020 – Rat
2021 – Ox
2022 – Tiger
2023 – Rabbit
2024 – Dragon
2025 – Snake
Each animal zodiac sign has different characteristics and traits, and it’s always fun to find out the which animal is yours depending on the year in which you are born and follow your sign.
A fellow colleague and friend of mine Endre Barath, Jr. a REALTOR® in Los Angeles, CA wrote two blog posts on New Year’s traditions and things to do on New Year’s Day to bring you good luck in the upcoming year.
For some the New Year began on January 1, for some, it will be today, February 19, 2015, for others it begins on their own personal birthdays. We all have our own beliefs, and traditions, and while they all might not work for you, there were a lot of great ideas shared on his two blog posts on what people like to do to bring themselves good health, wealth, and happiness in the upcoming New Year.
If you missed his posts, click on it here for part I, and here for part II and see if there is something you can do today that will bring good fortune your way for the next 12 months, give or take a few days!
If you’ve forgotten your New Year’s resolutions that you started on January 1, 2015, this is your chance for you to start-over with the beginning of the Chinese New Year.
For me, I’ll wear something red. Yes, I believe in luck, happiness, good health, prosperity, and true love! So I’ll do what I can to surround myself with the traditions that can bring those things into my life in abundance.
I’ll wish everyone I see a Happy New Year today, and I’ll use this opportunity to re-start those personal goals I made in January.
How will you celebrate the Chinese New Year? Even if you don’t have any plans, let me take this opportunity to wish everyone the ever best that the Chinese New Year will have to offer – good health, wealth, and a lot of happiness!
