IRONMAN Lake Tahoe – Volunteers Needed, September 22, 2013
The inaugural IRONMAN Lake Tahoe event will take place this Sunday, September 22, 2013 here in the North Lake Tahoe area, and the event will need over 3,100 IRONMAN volunteers needed to help make this event a success!
This is a big deal for Lake Tahoe. It is a big athletic event with over 2,500 athletes participating and over 10,000 visitors coming into the area for this special event.
If you’re not familiar with the IRONMAN events the IRONMAN event is the superman of triathlons, and the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe event will become one of strength, training, endurance and emotional stamina combining three physical events that all are done on one day – swimming, biking, and running.
The swimming event will take place in Kings Beach, California on Sunday morning with the Pro’s starting the race off at 6:30 a.m.
IRONMAN participants will swim 2.4 miles in this first phase of the competition. Once they complete the swim portion of the contest, athletes will move onto the Bike Course.
The biking event will begin in Kings Beach, California right after the swim portion is completed. The IRONMAN participants will begin their 112 mile bike ride in Kings Beach and move along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe moving through the Tahoe Vista area, then through Carnelian Bay with a detour up through the Carnelian Woods Condominium Development, and then back down to Highway 28 into Tahoe City.
Once they get to Tahoe City, they will then move onto Highway 89 South and head towards Truckee, California.
As the bicyclists reach Truckee they will follow a course that will take them through the Truckee area including downtown historic Truckee, and then out on Highway 267 heading back to Kings Beach with a detour through the Northstar area.
Once the bicyclists finish with the Northstar route they will climb up Brockway Summit (Highway 267) with an elevation of over 7,000+ feet above sea level, and then back down to Kings Beach, where they will once again bike back to Tahoe City following the same route they started with, but on this second loop, this time when they head back down the Truckee River corridor (Highway 89 South) they will end their ride in Squaw Valley.
In Squaw Valley the last leg of their triathlon will begin with their 26.2 mile race. That’s right, they will end the race on a marathon.
They will start their run at the Village at Squaw Valley running back down Squaw Valley Road, then up to the Resort at Squaw Creek, and then down to Highway 89 South where runners will head back to Tahoe City along the bike trail that runs along the Truckee River.
Runners will turn around just before getting to Tahoe City, and then head back to Squaw Valley on the bike path where their IRONMAN race will finish.

As I write about what they athletes will try an accomplish this coming Sunday in the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe event, I can’t help but be in awe and admire their confidence to even sign up for such a physically grueling event.
As for me, I will watch these impressive athletes from all over the world compete. I will stand by the side line and cheer them on. I have also signed up to be a volunteer for this event. I will be at the mandatory bike pick-up and check out in Squaw Valley from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
There are a number of pre-events that will take place in the days right before the event begins, but on the day of the IRONMAN event they will need volunteers to help with each step of the race.
On the day of the IRONMAN event, volunteers will begin at 5 a.m. and the race will officially end at 12 midnight. If you’ll be in the great North Lake Tahoe area, or if you are a North Lake Tahoe – Truckee second home owner, you may want to consider coming up and being a volunteer for the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe events.
They still need IRONMAN volunteers and your help, so click here to sign up!
If you want to do more than just be a spectator at the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe event this coming Sunday, September 22, 2013, consider being a volunteer, I am!
