More Snow in North Lake Tahoe – Truckee January 18 2017
If you haven’t heard, the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area has had back-to-back winter storms that continue to come through the area leaving feet, not inches of new snow.
Since my last update on our giant snow storms that left feet of snow on January 5, 2017, today, just 13 days later on January 18, 2017, it has started to snow , and once again, we’re expecting another 1-2 feet of new snow over-night.
According to the Sierra Sun in their Tahoe skiing: 3-8 feet of snow recorded in four days at upper elevations by Cassandra Walker, on January 13, 2017 she noted three fun facts about our snow fall citing Liesl Kenney/ Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows (Ski Resort), here are the two that I found very impressive:
- Over the past 45 years Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows January snowfall has averaged 70 inches. With 177 inches (of snow) in the first 12 days of 2017, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is already at 254% of their January average!
- The average annual snowfall for Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is 450 inches. As of January 12, the ski resort is at 63% of average for the entire winter!
It is true the past few drought years have been really tough to get through, but with all of this snow in just a few days reminds us of just how lean those snow years have been.
We are expecting 1-2 feet of new snow tonight! For those that will be here for the upcoming weekend the snow conditions should be amazing for the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas. If winter sports are something you enjoy, you’re going to have a fun weekend here!
It’s hard to imagine just how much snow we have here, and how huge these winter snow storms have been in the North Lake Tahoe area until you see it in person.
It’s been a long time since we’ve had such big back-to-back daily snow storms that just kept dumping more, and more, snow in the greater Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, Tahoe Donner, and Northstar areas, but that is exactly what has happened during the first half of January 2017.
Our area is beautiful, cold, and it is an impressive sight to see the tall walls of snow by the roads, and seeing our homes that look like they could only come out of a movie scene!
To give you an idea of just how much snow we’ve received here in greater Tahoe City – Truckee, North Lake Tahoe area, here are snow totals from some of our popular ski resorts as of today, January 18, 2017:
Homewood Ski Resort – Homewood, CA – The snow base is at 52″ with the upper mountain at 108″ (I live about 4 miles from the base of the ski resort on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, so I know they have amazing conditions!).
Northstar Ski Resort – Truckee, CA – Base is at 66” with a season total of 277″!
Alpine Meadows Ski Resort – Alpine Meadows, CA and Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley – Base at 83″ and the summit is at 132″!
Tahoe Donner Ski Resort, Truckee, CA – Base of 100″-120″(that’s 10 feet of snow)!
These winter snow storms continue to make our roads very slick and dangerous so be sure to check with CalTrans , or NVRoads, depending on if you are staying in California, or headed over to Nevada for current road conditions.
The power outages that we experienced last week seem to be behind us with just about everyone back on-line. As we gear up for the next round of snow storms, now is the time to re-check your emergency kits, re-stock, or add those extra items that you could have used during the last power outage to your emergency supplies.
Take a look just how beautiful the West Shore of Tahoe City is after a mega snow storm!
If you haven’t planned a trip to come up to Tahoe to ski, cross-country ski, snowboard, snowshoe, snowmobile, ice skate, or just make a snowman and play in the snow, now is the book your winter trip to the greater Truckee, Tahoe City, and North Lake Tahoe area!
January is more than half over and the phrase “let it snow” has never been more true! Come up and take advantage of one of the best snow and ski seasons that the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee area are enjoying!
