Supermoon Eclipse – North Lake Tahoe, CA Sept. 27, 2015
We have had several recent opportunities to see a lunar eclipse (this is the forth one since January 2014), but with the last Supermoon Eclipse occurring back in 1982, and with the wait of another eighteen (18) years until the next Supermoon Eclipse, this Sunday, September 27, 2015 will be your opportunity to see a Supermoon Eclipse even here in North Lake Tahoe!
While the viewing of this Supermoon Eclipse will not be as good as it will be on the east coast of the United States, it is still worth trying to see as the next one won’t be until 2033.
Not only is this a Supermoon, which means it is the closest to the earth in its rotation cycle and will appear larger and brighter in size, but it will also be called a Blood Moon because the lunar eclipse makes the moon look blood red in color as the eclipse happens.
This Supermoon is also the Harvest Moon this year as this is the full moon that will be closest to the autumnal equinox, which makes this Supermoon Eclipse a big one!
If you’ll be up in North Lake Tahoe, which is on Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) here is the Supermoon Eclipse Schedule:
Supermoon Eclipse – North Lake Tahoe, CA Sept. 27, 2015
Moon begins the eclipse process 5:11 p.m.
Total moon eclipse begins 7:07 p.m.
Middle of total moon eclipse is at 7:47 p.m.
Total moon eclipse ends at 8:28 p.m.
Moon completes the eclipse process 10:22 p.m.
Check out Space.com which has great information on the entire process!
The sun will set around 7 p.m. PDT in North Lake Tahoe, so while we may not have the best viewing for the first part of the eclipse, we should have a good view of the total eclipse process and when it ends and begins the separation, we should be able to see that happen.
If just watching the Supermoon Eclipse is not enough for you and you’d like to make an adventure out of the Supermoon Eclipse and take it to the next level, check out the Total Eclipse Kayak Tour on the shores of Lake Tahoe starting at 5:30p.m. Cost is $50 and includes equipment and a guide. You can make reservations at www.TahoeAdventureCompany.com
Call me a science geek, but these rare astronomy events are worth making the effort to see. Who knows where you’ll be in eighteen years, or who you’ll be with, so make the most of this Supermoon Eclipse this Sunday evening.
See it with a friend, or call someone special and make that connection. Remember you don’t have to be in the same space, or time zone to see this event happen together, so make the most of it!
If you’ll be here in North Lake Tahoe this weekend, don’t miss the Supermoon Eclipse this Sunday, September 27, 2015!
