Free Drug Take Back – Tahoe City, CA Saturday, April 27, 2013

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. you’ll have the opportunity to drop off unused, unwanted, and/or expired medications at two locations in the Tahoe- Truckee area. Plan now to take advantage of the Free Drug Take Back day in Tahoe City and in Truckee, California. This is a great way to properly dispose of medications.

Most people think that by tossing their old, or unwanted medications down the toilet, or in the trash can the job is done.

The problem with these methods is they can damage the environment. Water treatment removes and reduces some types of pharmaceuticals, but it is not a complete removal, and low levels of medications can still be in the water.

Treated water is often used for irrigation and wildlife animals drink this water. Do you really want your medications in the water supply system that may be providing food on your table?

The best thing everyone can do to reduce environmental medication pollution is to take their old, unwanted, and unused medications to one of the take-back locations and have them dispose of it properly.

Acceptable Items:

Prescriptions – including controlled substances (Remember to mark out any personal information)
Over-the-Counter Medications
Veterinary Medications

Unacceptable Items:

No needles, or lancets
No medical waste
No illicit drugs
No inhalers, hydrogen peroxide

Don’t forget to mark out your personal information on the label, or remove it.

Quarter Mania is a fun-filled way to get a bargain. Those that have been to an event before describe it as auction meets “Pick-a-Prize”. You purchase your Bidding Paddle(s) at the door, and you’ll need to bring a bucket of quarters to bid on some wonderful items up for auction. You bid the number of quarters (typically 1-5) assigned to the item you want to win. If your paddle number is drawn – you win!

There will also be Raffle tickets available for purchase and another chance to win some amazing prizes.

You can preview the auction items beginning at 1 p.m., with the auction to begin at 2 p.m.

Proceeds go to support the Sierra Senior Services programs. You may remember them from the monthly Pancake breakfast fund raiser they hold on the first Sunday of each month.

Sierra Senior Services feeds and supports Seniors in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee Communities. Senior Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides meals to qualified senior citizens age 60+. While I was on their web site, www.SierraSeniors.org I learned the following:

Sierra Senior Services (non-profit group that oversees the Meals on Wheels program) only get 30% of their funding from the government. That means 70% of the annual budget comes from fundraising activities and private donations.
In North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, California area 75% of the home delivered meal recipients live alone.
In Nevada County (Most of Truckee is located in Nevada County, California) 62% of the home delivered meal recipients are over the age of 80.
Over 88% of the home delivered meal recipients rely solely on Social Security.
Approximately 54% of the recipients are disabled.
A $75 donation will help feed a senior for a week.

The Earth Day event in Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe is a way to celebrate and promote the region’s unique beauty and how to preserve and protect it.

Saturday will be the largest eco-event in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California area. The Lake Tahoe – Truckee Earth Day events will take place at the Village at Squaw Valley this Saturday, April 20, 2013.

Admission is FREE. Transportation on TART (Tahoe Area Rapid Transportation) is FREE. There will be live music, information booths, a children’s area, raffle, and the Trashion Show.

The Trashion Show is put on by the Truckee High School Envirolution Club. Each outfit is made by the student and is made out of materials that do not biodegrade easily. Each outfit is designed to send a message and while there should be some funny outfits, you’ll also learn how you can be more environmentally aware and make better environmental choices!

You’ll also have a chance to recycle electronics, phones, monitors, TC’s, fax machines, sterero equipement, etc… this year.

NO – house hold batteries, tires, furniture, or household waste (paint, aerosol cans etc..)
