Tahoe Donner – Truckee New Year’s Eve 2023

It’s almost here, New Year’s Eve in the greater North Lake  Tahoe – Truckee area, Sunday, December 31, 2023!

If you are looking for some ways to celebrate and bring in the New Year, check out what is going on in Tahoe Donner this year!  Enjoy their Light Parade followed by their annual fireworks show!

Here is the schedule of the Free Tahoe Donner New Year’s Eve event:

New Year’s Eve Light Parade and Fireworks Show – Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort 

  • 4:30 -6 p.m. Check-in for those skiing in the light parade ( pre-registration is required to ski in the Light Parade)
  • 6:15 | Load Chairs – event to start shortly after
  • 6:45- 7 p.m.  Fireworks Show |  The fireworks will start once the light parade is done.  If you have a view of the Tahoe Donner ski hill you’ll be able to see the light parade and fireworks show.
  • Parking – Parking is limited in this area, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to park.
  • Conditions and Weather Permitting
  • Where:  Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort | 11603 Snowpeak Way, Truckee, CA 96161 
  • Cost:  Free – no regristration is needed if you are just coming to watch the event!

A few tips if you’re headed to any of our outdoor events:

  • Dress Warmly – You’ll want to dress warmly and in layers as you’ll be outside and the weather for New Year’s Eve is expected to be in the mid-’20s!
  • Be Early – Parking is always a challenge during our holidays/ski season, and during the Christmas – New Year’s holiday period, we’re at capacity, so allow enough time for parking and finding a good spot to watch the show!  If you are taking the bus, check out the schedules and go for the earlier route.  Events tend to start on time in Tahoe, so give yourself extra travel time and plan to be early.
  • Flashlight – Not every place has outdoor lighting at night in our area. Always bring along a small flashlight.  Don’t count on your cell phone flashlight.  You know you’ll take a lot of photos at the event, and that always drains the battery faster, so carry a real flashlight and make it easy to find your way back to the place you are staying at, to your car, or to the bus stop.

There are a few ways to enjoy any of our outdoor New Year Eve events:  

The first is to park and join the others that have gathered for the event. 

Enjoy the people watching, free music and entertainment before the light parade, or music begins, followed by the fireworks, or drone  show. 

You can also just watch the light parades, fireworks and/or drone shows from any place that has a view of the ski runs/event area.

If you see groups out in the parking lot with their camping chairs and blankets by their cars, chances are I’m one of them, waiting for the show to begin.

We do miss the people watching, and the enjoyment that comes from the dancing and live music, but the trade-off is an easy-in and easy-out and we can bring Finn, our Irish Wolfhound dog with us in the car!

We’ve been watching the firework shows from our car for a few years now and we’ve found a good spot in the parking lot (typically at the very back), or anywhere you can see the ski resorts to watch the show.

Regardless of where you watch the light parade s, firework, or drone shows, you’ll have a good time!

Looking for something more traditional?  There are a number of local restaurants and bars in the area that will also be having special New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re looking for free entertainment these three events are an easy and fun way to bring in the new year!

Remember if you drink, don’t drive.  Check out the Tahoe area bus system  for their expanded night service for a safe ride home.

It’s here!  Today is the shortest day of the year in Tahoe City, California, Thursday, December 21, 2023!

Everyone has their favorite holiday, or day of the year to celebrate, and for me, one of my favorites is the shortest day of the year!

I know that sounds strange celebrating the shortest day of the year, but for me, I’ve always lived in areas that when we make the time change, and we fall back into Standard Time we really have experienced a short day of sunshine, which is less than ideal.

It’s always hard for me to have it be so dark at 5 p.m. when just a few months ago it was still light at 8 p.m.!

So for these reasons, I can’t help but look forward to those warmer, longer, sunshine filled days and evenings!

The shorest day of the year means tomorrow we begin the process of adding daylight to our days, and the march towards the longest day of the year in June!

For me, the new year has already started!!!  Tomorrow, sunrise will be at 7:17 a.m. and sunset will be at 4:42 p.m., that’s almost two (2) extra minutes of sunshine!!!  In thirty (30) days that an hour of extra daylight at the end of the day!  The magic of time moving forwrd!

Another thing that happens on Thursday, December 21, 2023 in addition to being the shortest day of the year, we also mark the winter solstice and the official beginning of the 2023-2024 winter season here in North Lake Tahoe- Truckee area!

The seasons have changed, another year has passed, and we all keep moving forward towards a new day, new year, and the beauty, and fun that comes with our winter activities!  

So before this winter season becomes more amazing memories captured in your photographs – enjoy the snow – enjoy the moment!    

Here are some more dates to mark on your calendar: 

  • End of this year is Sunday, December 31, 2023, just 11 days left in 2023, including today
  • The beginning of a new year, Monday, January 1, 2024, at the stroke of midnight only 12 days from today.  How about an extra day?  Yes, it’s Leap Year, and Thursday, February 29, 2024 is just 70 days away.
  • Ready for the next time change to set your clocks ahead one hour (back to Daylight Savings Time)?  Sunday, March 10, 2024, just  80 days away.

It is here! Tthe beginning of the holiday season for the greater Truckee – North Lake Tahoe area. 

Yes, Thanksgiving isn’t until next week, but why wait for fun to begin?

If you are looking for a way to get into the holiday mood, check out the annual “Bud Fish” Truckee Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony this Friday, November 17, 2023 in downtown historic Truckee, California!

Ready to get into the holiday mood?  Going to a holiday tree lighting event is one way to get into the swing the upcoming season!

While the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area will have several tree lighting events, this is the first one of the season!

It is a great way to enjoy some holiday fun in downtown historic Truckee with the lighting of the Bud Fish Christmas Tree, along with a visit from Santa, hot chocolate and caroling.

This 40+ year tradition will begin around 4 p.m. when over 600 elementary school children will decorate the Christmas trees that will line historic downtown Truckee on Donner Pass Road.

Santa will arrive in style with the help of the Truckee Fire Department’s antique fire truck and they will end up in front of the Bud Fish Tree for the annual Lighting Ceremony, which should happen at 5:20 p.m. (always arrive early so you don’t miss out on the countdown)!

One of the great things I love about living in a smaller community are our local events and their personal connection to them. 

You may not know why this event is called the “Bud Fish” Tree Lighting event. 

The naming of this event followed the death of Bud Fish, a charter member of the local Rotary Club of Truckee, and a longtime resident of Truckee, California.

Each year Bud, who was a forester, would see to it that Fibreboard provided the holiday Christmas Tree for the downtown Truckee area. 

He would assemble a crew of volunteers to put up the tree and decorate it.

After his passing, the Rotary Club of Truckee secured, planted, and dedicated a permanent Christmas Tree in historic downtown Truckee in his memory.

For many that attend this annual event, who watch the Truckee holiday tree light-up, it becomes so much more than twinkling lights and tinsel!

Here are the event details:

Holiday Tree Lighting – Truckee 2023

  • Where: At the Bud Fish Tree located in front of the Train Depot in downtown historic Truckee, California
  • When:  Friday, November 17, 2023, starting at 4:15 p.m. Street Tree decorating begins
    4:30 p.m.
  • Tree Lighting Ceremony begins  5:20 p.m.* Times are approximate, and if you don’t want to miss out on the fun, so give yourself plenty of time for parking and arrive early!
  • Cost:  FREE
  • Weather:  It will be cold with temperatures in the low 40’s – high 30’s this evening, so dress warm!

XC Ski Swap – Tahoe City 2023Our seasons have changed!  Our mountain tops are now covered in fresh snow, and we know our next big winter season 2023-2024 is almost ready to start!

If you love to cross country ski, or spend time in the backcountry, then the Tahoe City cross country ski swap is your kind of event!

This is California’s largest cross country (XC) ski swap event and it happens the second weekend in November of each year!

This year it will be Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tahoe Cross Country facility at 925 Country Club Drive in Tahoe City, CA!

Admission is a suggested $10/donation for buyers, which will get you entry and the proceeds are supporting the TCCSEA Youth Programs.  This is your opportunity to find some great deals on new and used equipment and help support our local Tahoe Cross-Country Ski Education Association program.

Our world-class ski resorts are getting ready for another great winter season, and so should you!  Now is the time to check out your winter sports equipment and take advantage of the XC Ski Swap event in Tahoe City, CA this Saturday, November 11, 2023.

What will you find?  How about boots, poles, snowshoes, clothing, accessories, skate and classic, telemark and light touring gear just to name a few items. 

If you haven’t tried out cross country skiing, this is a great way to pick up all of the equipment you’ll need at a fraction of the cost!

Our tempertures have dropped, and before you know we’ll have snow on the ground in Tahoe City!  Our winter sports venues will all be open again, so now is the time to take advantage of this large XC Ski Swap event. 

Need another reason to shop?  This is a fundraiser for the Tahoe XC Ski Education Association so you’re getting a two-for-one by shopping and supporting this local group.

XC Ski Swap – Tahoe City 2023

  • When:  9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, November 11, 2023
  • Where:  Tahoe Cross Country Lodge | 925 County Club Drive, Tahoe City, CA 96145
    • Directions:  On Hwy 28 near the 7-Eleven at Dollar Point, take Fabian Way on the north side of the highway, right on Village Road, which has the sign to the entrance to the Highlands neighborhood on the corner, veer to the right then take a left onto Country Club Drive about 3 miles NE from downtown Tahoe City.  The Tahoe XC center will be on your left.  Look for all of the cars!
  • Admission Cost – A $10 donation is suggested.  Just a FYI, they will limit the number of shoppers to twenty-five (25) at any given time, so be patient if you get there and you have to wait to get in!

It’s time for a new event in the greater Tahoe City area and it’s one that many of us have wanted for some time!

Starting on Thursday, October 26, 2023 through Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (excluding Thanksgiving Day), you’ll find the Tahoe City Fall Harvet Farmers Market at the Boatworks Mall in Downtown Tahoe City, CA!

I think this style of Farmers Market has been a long time in coming to town and it’s great to get the opportunity to be able to shop a Farmers  Market for more than just our warmer summer months!

I went to check things out last week, and you’ll find many of the familiar faces and vendors that you’ve seen at the Tahoe City Farmers Market at Common Beach this past summer with a booth set-up inside the Boatworks Mall.

What a nice way to make the transition from summer into fall with an indoor Farmers Market!

If you’ll be up in the greater Tahoe City – Truckee area during our Fall months months, you’ll want to make sure to stop by the Tahoe City Fall Harvest Farmers’ Market and take advantage of the fresh fruits, veggies, mushrooms, cheese, meats, and fish just to name of few of the items you’ll find at the new indoor Fall Harvest Farmers Market!

You may not know that our local Tahoe City Farmers’ Market program is seasonal in our area and this is the first step to extending that season to almost eight (8) months!

Our Tahoe City Farmers Market is made up of local farmers and merchants from the greater Auburn Foothill area and the North Lake Tahoe area bring in their goods for sale into the downtown area of Tahoe City, California.

Depending on the time of the season (early, mid, or late Fall) you’ll find bread, pastries, jams, vinegar, olive oils, artesian cheeses (if you love cheese then you won’t want to miss the “Cheese Lady” from Dedrick’s Cheeses), meat, fish (yes, my Craig is a big fan of) The Little Fish Company and their Hawaiian Style Ahi Poke, and if you know what you want, you can always pre-order from them and pick-up at the market.

There is nothing better than fresh-picked fruit off the trees, or the sweet smell of those fresh strawberries (yes, there were fresh strawberries last week, along with raspberries and blackberries)!

Other items you’ll find at the Tahoe City Farmers Market: honey, herbs, mushrooms (yes there has been a vendor that offers just mushrooms), onions, beets, kale, chard, arugula, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, artichokes, asparagus, apples, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, apricots, peppers, squashes, and depending on the time of the season you’ll find a good assortment of fresh food, not to mention a wide variety of vendors.

Along with our fresh foods, there are also non-perishable goods for sale, which may include clothing, jewelry, soaps, lotions, and there is always the surprise of a new vendor!

If you’re in the mood for something to eat right now, you’ll also find specialty food trucks, and vendors, which vary from week to week.  

You’ll find the Tahoe City Fall Harvest Farmers’ Market open every Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following location:

If you’ll be in the greater Tahoe City area on any Thursday between late October through mid-late December, just watch for the Farmers Market open signs in downtown Tahoe City!

It’s a great way to get some wonderful, local fresh produce, baked goods, and to just enjoy being here in the North Lake Tahoe area!
