Don’t miss the 41st Annual Truckee Ski and Snowboard Swap, Saturday, November 2, 2024 at the Truckee Community Recreation Center (10981 Truckee Way) in Truckee, California.

If you’re in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California area this weekend, this is the winter sports equipment event for you!

Admission is free for all ages, and the event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday!

We’ve already seen our first dustining of snow over the last few days in  October, and it is looking like we are headed for another big winter season here in the greater Truckee – North Lake Tahoe area, so this is a great way to get newer equipment at a fraction of the price.

You will also find local representatives from Tahoe ski shops and the nearby ski resorts on hand to answer to your questions.  

If you’re looking for winter clothing, ski equipment, boots, boards, poles, hats, gloves, accessories, and items you probably never thought of but could really use, you’ll find it here.

Sierra Senior Services 19th Annual Spaghetti Dinner – 2020

It’s January and that means it is time for the 19th Annual Spaghetti Dinner, BINGO, and silent Auction supporting the Sierra Senior Services organization.

This years’ event will be held in Truckee, California on Saturday, January 25, 2020.

This event is a significant fundraiser for the Sierra Senior Services organization (a non-profit organization) and your support is greatly appreciated.  

Doors open at 5 p.m. at the Truckee Community Recreational Center (10981 Truckee Way) with dinner being severed at 6 p.m. followed by BINGO starting at 7 p.m.

This is a fun evening out, and along with a good meal, you’ll have fun playing BINGO, or becoming a winner in their silent auction.

This local fund-raising event benefiting the Sierra Senior Services program has sold out for the past ten plus years with over 500 attendees.  

If you want to go you should get your tickets in advance on-line at www.SierraSeniors.org.

You can also purchase tickets at the Sierra Senior Services Center, or at the Plumas Bank Truckee, CA branch.  

If you’ve missed out on buying your tickets in advance, you can always try to buy a ticket at the door.

Want to learn more about the local Sierra Senior Services organization?  The Sierra Senior Services organization feeds and supports Seniors in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities. 

Senior Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides meals to qualified senior citizens age 60+.  

Last year, the Sierra Senior Services provided over 38,000 meals to at-risk seniors who otherwise might not have had a meal without the local program.  

We often forget not every Senior has a family member that lives nearby, or that they even have a family.  No one ever wants to say “Hey I need help, I’m hungry”… 

The demand for the local services that the Sierra Senior Services organizations continues to increase.  Their website is loaded with great information on who they are helping:

  • Sierra Senior Services (non-profit group that oversees the Meals on Wheels program) only receives 31% of their funding from the government (Federal and State).  That means 69% of the annual budget comes from fundraising activities,  private donations, Private Foundations, Placer County Government, In-kind support, and a small percentage comes from the participants.
  • In North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, California area 75% of the home-delivered meal recipients live alone.
  • In Nevada County (Most of Truckee is located in Nevada County, California) 62% of the home-delivered meal recipients are over the age of 80.
  • Over 88% of the home-delivered meal recipients rely solely on Social Security.
  • Approximately 54% of the recipients are disabled.
  • A $75 donation will help feed a senior for a week.

It is here, the beginning of the holiday season for the greater Truckee – North Lake Tahoe area.

If you are looking for a way to get into the holiday mood, check out the annual “Bud Fish” Truckee Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony this Friday, November 22, 2019 in downtown historic Truckee, California!

We will have several tree lighting events in our area in our various communities and towns, but this is the first one of the season.

It is a great way to enjoy some holiday fun in downtown historic Truckee with the lighting of the Bud Fish Christmas Tree, along with a visit from Santa, hot chocolate and caroling.

This 20+ year tradition will begin at 4 p.m. when elementary school children will decorate the Christmas trees that will line historic downtown Truckee on Donner Pass Road.

At 4:30 p.m. Santa will arrive by the Truckee Fire Department’s antique fire truck and will end up in front of the Bud Fish Tree for the annual Lighting Ceremony, which should happen at 5:15 p.m.

One of the great things I love about living in a smaller community are our local events and their personal connection to them. 

You may not know why this event is called the “Bud Fish” Tree Lighting event. 

The naming of this event followed the death of Bud Fish, a charter member of the local Rotary Club of Truckee, and a longtime resident of Truckee, California.

Each year Bud, who was a forester, would see to it that Fibreboard provided the holiday Christmas Tree for the downtown Truckee area.  He would assemble a crew of volunteers to put up the tree and decorate it.

After his passing, the Rotary Club of Truckee secured, planted, and dedicated a permanent Christmas Tree in historic downtown Truckee in his memory.

In addition to the planting of the tree, which has grown into a beautiful addition in the downtown area, the Rotary Club has partnered with the American Cancer Society in welcoming everyone to the lighting of this memorial tree and anyone can purchase a Memorial Tree Ornament supporting this cause. 

Memorial Tree Ornaments can be purchased inside the Welcome Center for a donation to honor cancer survivors, or to pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease. 

The funds raised go to help fight cancer, and are donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Truckee Tahoe. 

For many that attend this annual event, seeing the Truckee holiday tree light-up is so much more than twinkling lights and tinsel.

Here are the event details:

Holiday Tree Lighting – Truckee 2019

  • Where: At the Bud Fish Tree located in front of the Train Depot in downtown historic Truckee, California
  • When:  Friday, November 22, 2019.  4 P.m. Street Tree decorating begins
    4:30 p.m. Santa arrives 5:15 p.m.     Tree Lighting Ceremony begins  * Times are approximate, and if you don’t want to miss out on the fun, arrive early!
  • Cost:  FREE
  • Ornament Cost:  Memorial tree ornaments can be purchased inside the Welcome Center for a donation to honor cancer survivors, or to pay tribute to the lives lost to cancer.  We all know some who is fighting the battle, or has lost the battle with cancer, so give generously.

Holiday shopping in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area just became a little easier with the 2019 Soroptishop Holiday Shopping Craft Fair (Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner) fundraiser event, this Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the new Truckee Community Recreational Center.

If you’re stuck on what to get that someone special, or if you still need a gift for your co-worker, the book club members, or you just need more stocking stuffers, this is a great local event.

A great way to find that unique gift, but this even supports many non-profit groups.

You’ll find unique items that you may not find in a big box store and you’ll be helping those with good causes that go far beyond this holiday season.

This year over fifty (50) artisan vendors will have items for sale.  Here is what you’ll find at this years’ event:  jewelry, clothing, items to decorate your home, art work, seasonal items, and items that were made and produced that are unique to the North Lake Tahoe area.

Why shop the Soroptimist annual fund-raising event this year?  It’s a good question, and the reason that you should come out and pay the $10 admission fee for this event is because you’ll be supporting their second largest annual fund-raising event that provides support to many local projects that serve the greater local Truckee area.

The cost is only $3 a person, children under 12 are free, from 11 a.m. today until 4 p.m.
