Can you feel it?  It’s almost here, New Year’s Eve in the greater North Lake  Tahoe – Truckee area, Sunday, December 31, 2023!

If you are looking for some ways to celebrate and bring in the New Year, check out what is going on in the Northstar California Ski Resort area this year! 

Enjoy their activies, which include a live band on the stage by the ice skating rink from 7 – 10 p.m.  with a Drone Show at 9 p.m.! 

If you haven’t seen a drone show yet, you’ll be amazed at what they can do!

Here is the schedule of the Free Northstar California – Truckee New Year’s Eve event:

New Year’s Eve Live Band and Drone Show – Northstar California Ski Resort 

  • DJ on the Village state | afternoon
  • 360 Video photo Booth by the tree and True North | 6 – 9 p.m.
  • Face painting on the overlook | 6 – 9 p.m.
  • NYE Bank on stage | 7 – 10 p.m.
  • Drone Show | 9 p.m.
  • Parking – Parking is limited in this area, and there are new rules in place, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to park.
  • Conditions and Weather Permitting
  • Where:  Northstar California Ski Resort | Northstar Village, Truckee, CA
  • Cost:  Free

A few tips if you’re headed to any of our outdoor events:

  • Dress Warmly – You’ll want to dress warmly and in layers as you’ll be outside and the weather for New Year’s Eve is expected to be in the mid-’20s!
  • Be Early – Finding a spot to sit, or finding a parking is always a challenge during our holidays/ski season, and during the Christmas – New Year’s holiday period, we’re at capacity, so allow enough time for parking and finding a good spot to watch the show!  If you are taking the bus, check out the schedules and go for the earlier route.  Events tend to start on time in Tahoe, so give yourself extra travel time and plan to be early.
  • Flashlight – Not every place has outdoor lighting at night in our area. Always bring along a small flashlight.  Don’t count on your cell phone flashlight.  You know you’ll take a lot of photos at the event, and that always drains the battery faster, so carry a real flashlight and make it easy to find your way back to the place you are staying at, to your car, or to the bus stop.

There are a few ways to enjoy any of our outdoor New Year Eve events:  

The first is to park and join the others that have gathered for the event. 

Enjoy the people watching, free music and entertainment before the drone, or fireworks show. 

You can also take a short-cut, and just watch the drone or fireworks show from any place that has a view of the ski runs, or village.

I personally think this is easier to do at Tahoe Donner, or Palisades Tahoe than it is in Northstar, but it is an option.

If you see groups out in the parking lot with their camping chairs and blankets by their cars, chances are I’m one of them, waiting for the show to begin.

We do miss the in-person event, the energy, and the craziness that comes with people celebrating.   

There is a certain joy and freedom that you feel at an event with live music, and all that goes with it. 

You just don’t get that out in the parking lot, but the trade-off is an easy-in and easy-out, no large crowds, not a lot of walking, and we can bring Finn, our Irish Wolfhound dog with us in the car!

We’ve been watching the drone shows from our car this past year, and we’ve found if you can find aspot that has a view of the event, you’ll get to see the show.  It is an amazing event to watch what these drones can do in such a close proximity to each other.  If you haven’t seen one in person, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Regardless of where you watch the drone, or firework shows, you’ll have a good time!

Looking for something more traditional?  There are a number of local restaurants and bars in the area that will also be having special New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re looking for free entertainment these three events are an easy and fun way to bring in the new year!

Remember if you drink, don’t drive.  Check out the Tahoe area bus system  for their expanded night service for a safe ride home.
