Annual Cushing Crossing – Olympic Valley – 2025

If you are looking for a signal that our Tahoe winter season is coming to an end, look no further than the Annual Cushing Crossing event in Olympic Valley, California!

The second half of March delivered a lot of snow to the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area and now it’s time to end the season and move towards summer!

While the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in Olympic Valley will continue to having skiing through Memorial Day weekend, the 33rd annual Cushing Crossing event will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025!

This annual event is the unofficial signal that the ski season is coming to an end.

This event is fun, and you’ll have some real laughs, along with being impressed at those that will attempt the 33rd Annual Cushing Crossing-Olympic Valley – 2025, on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

I’ve been to this pond skimming event several times and it is one crazy, fun time that everyone enjoys watching.

Skiers and snowboarders ski down the hill, in creative costumes that they have put together, and attempt to skim across Cushing Pond.

This is a contest and participants are awarded for their outrageous costumes, along with how far and well they skim the pond.

There are some great prizes, along with bragging rights, which will bring out the best in those that participate in this event.

Some contestants will make it across the pond in style, while others will crash with a big splash and sink into the pond water.

It’s fun to see how the judges score each participant and who gets big points for costumes, originality, style, and of course how they skimmed the pond, and if they made it across the pond.

While there will be some seating that is already set-up, from past experience, I recommend bringing along your own camping chairs so you are guaranteed to have a seat in a spot where you can see the participants.

Here are the details for the  Annual Cushing Crossing Event – 2025

Saturday, May 3, 2025

  • 8:00 a.m. – Registration Opens – cost is $20/per participant (cash only, no exceptions)
  • Limited number of entrants.
  • Must be 18+ years or older
  • Must bring your own life vest (loaners available)
  • Must be present in line to register. No saving spots. If you leave the line, you lose your place in the line.
  • 1 p.m.  – The Event Begins
  • 3 p.m. – Awards
  • Location – just beyond the KT Base Bar at the top, west end, of the Village
    • The Village at Palisades Tahoe, 1895 Olympic Valley Road, Olympic Valley, CA 96146
  • Cost to watch is FREE!!!

Happy New Year 2025 | North Lake Tahoe     

A new day, a new year, and another year in the history books!  Hello 2025!

Bringing in 2025 means we are now half way through another decade!  So many changes, and yet so many things stay the same.  A lot of joy and sadness wrapped up into just tweleve short months.  

As each year passes, my gratitude and appreciation for seeing old friends, making new relationships, and for having the opportunity to have new experiences and adventures grows in my heart. 

I value the past as I move forward into each new day, but I still struggle with how time doesn’t stop for anyone!

Today is January 1, 2026, and just like, another new year has already begun!

As you make your plans and set your goals for the upcoming new year, and beyond, be sure to make time for the activities, things, and tasks that really matter to you.  Stop and cherish the moments that you’ll look back on as “the good old days”, which are the days you are living through today!  

The sun rose at 7:20 a.m. here in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Tahoe City – Truckee, California area on January 1, 2025. 

Sunshine with day time temperatures in the low 40’s with little to some snow on the ground.  A big change from the holiday week in 2021, just three years ago, which left us with multiple fee of snow!

The days are still very short and with only 9 hours and 30 minutes of daylight before the sunset at 4:49 p.m.!

It is my New Year’s wish that every day in 2025 brings you prosperity, healthy days, laughter, joy, and a reason to celebrate!  

Where ever the road in life takes you this year, I hope your travel and journey will be a safe one!

Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley New Year’s Eve 2024

There a lot of fun ways to spend New Year’s Eve here in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 and here is one of them!

If you are looking for some ways to celebrate and bring in the New Year, check out what is going on at the Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley area this year! 

Enjoy their Torchlight (LED) Parade, live music on the KT Deck, followed by their annual fireworks show and an East Coast Balloon Drop at 9 p.m.!

Here is the schedule of the Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley New Year’s Eve event:

New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show – Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort 

  • 5 p.m. New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade (Must have pre-registered and purchased tickets to be in the parade) Any view of the ski slope will allow you to see this parade coming down the hill.
  • 7 p.m.  Fireworks Show |  The fireworks will start once the light parade is done.  If you have a view of the ski slope, you’ll be able to see the light parade and fireworks show.  That means even from the parking lot, you’ll be able to see the show.  Personally, I recommend being in the KT Deck to hear the live music and watch the action!
  • 9 p.m. East Coast Balloon Drop – KT Deck
  • Parking – Parking at the Village may have new rules in place, so check this out ahead of time and give yourself plenty of time to park and walk into the event.
  • Conditions and Weather Permitting
  • Where:  Palisades Tahoe Village Ski Resort | 1960 Olympic Valley Road, Olympic Valley, CA

A few tips if you’re headed to any of our outdoor events:

  • Dress Warmly – You’ll want to dress warmly and in layers as you’ll be outside and the weather for New Year’s Eve is expected to be in the mid-’20s!
  • Be Early – Parking is always a challenge during our holidays/ski season, and during the Christmas – New Year’s holiday period, we’re at capacity, so allow enough time for parking and finding a good spot to watch the show!  If you are taking the bus, check out the schedules and go for the earlier route.  Events tend to start on time in Tahoe, so give yourself extra travel time and plan to be early.
  • Flashlight – Not every place has outdoor lighting at night in our area. Always bring along a small flashlight.  Don’t count on your cell phone flashlight.  You know you’ll take a lot of photos at the event, and that always drains the battery faster, so carry a real flashlight and make it easy to find your way back to the place you are staying at, to your car, or to the bus stop.

There are a few ways to enjoy any of our outdoor New Year Eve events:  

The first is to park and join the other attendees, and enjoy being outdoor, do some people watching, dance to the free live band music and entertainment before and during the light parade, followed by cheering for the fireworks show. 

Or, you can skip the crowds and just watch the light parade and fireworks show from any place in the Olympic Valley area that has a view of the ski runs!

If you see groups out in the parking lot with their camping chairs and blankets by their cars, chances are I’m one of them (yes, I’m that old lady), waiting for the show to begin. 

We do miss the people watching, and the enjoyment that comes from dancing,  live music, and crowds, but the trade-off for us is an easy-in and easy-out and we can bring Finn, our Irish Wolfhound dog with us!

We’ve been watching the firework shows from our car for a few years now and we’ve found good spots in the parking lot (typically at the very back), or anywhere you can see the ski resorts to watch the show.

Regardless of where you watch the light parade and firework shows, you’ll have a good time!

Looking for something more traditional?  There are a number of local restaurants and bars in the area that will also be having special New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re looking for free entertainment these two events are an easy and fun way to bring in the new year!

Remember if you drink, don’t drive.  Check out the Tahoe area bus system  for their expanded night service for a safe ride home.

Can you feel it?  New Year’s Eve in the greater North Lake  Tahoe – Truckee area, Tuesday, December 31, 2024 is almost here!

If you are looking for some ways to celebrate and bring in the New Year, our local ski resorts have some free and fantastic events going on!  

Check out what is going on in the Northstar California Ski Resort area this year! 

Enjoy their activities, which include a live band on the stage by the ice skating rink from 7 – 10 p.m.  with a Drone Show at 9 p.m.! 

If you haven’t seen a drone show yet, you’ll be amazed at what they can do!

Here is the schedule of the Free Northstar California – Truckee New Year’s Eve event:

New Year’s Eve Live Band and Drone Show – Northstar California Ski Resort 

  • DJ on the Village state | afternoon 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • 360 Video photo Booth by the tree and True North | 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Face painting on the overlook | 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • Big Crush on stage | 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
  • Drone Show | 9 p.m.
  • Parking – Parking is limited in this area, and there are new rules in place, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to park.
  • Conditions and Weather Permitting
  • Where:  Northstar California Ski Resort | Northstar Village, Truckee, CA
  • Cost:  Free

A few tips if you’re headed to any of our outdoor events:

We do miss the in-person event, the energy, and the craziness that comes with people celebrating.   

There is a certain joy and freedom that you feel at an event with live music, and all that goes with it. 

You just don’t get that out in the parking lot, but the trade-off is an easy-in and easy-out, no large crowds, not a lot of walking, and we can bring Finn, our Irish Wolfhound dog with us in the car!

We’ve been watching the drone shows from our car this past year, and we’ve found if you can find a spot that has a view of the event, you’ll get to see the show.  It is an amazing event to watch what these drones can do in such a close proximity to each other.  If you haven’t seen one in person, I think you’ll enjoy it!

Regardless of where you watch the drone, or firework shows, you’ll have a good time!

North Lake Tahoe – Truckee Ski Resort New Year Eve 2024 event options:

Looking for something more traditional?  There are a number of local restaurants and bars in the area that will also be having special New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re looking for free entertainment these three events are an easy and fun way to bring in the new year!

XC Ski Swap – Tahoe City 2024

XC Ski Swap – Tahoe City 2024

Our seasons have changed!  Looking at our mountains, they are now covered in fresh snow, and that means our next big winter sports season 2024-2025 is almost ready to start!

If you love to cross country ski, or spend time in the backcountry, then the Tahoe City cross country ski swap is your kind of event!

This is California’s largest cross country (XC) ski swap event and it happens the second weekend in November of each year!

This year it will be Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tahoe Cross Country facility at 925 Country Club Drive in Tahoe City, CA!

Admission is a suggested $10/donation for buyers, which will get you entry and the proceeds are supporting the TCCSEA Youth Programs. 

This is your opportunity to find some great deals on new and used equipment and help support our local Tahoe Cross-Country Ski Education Association program.

Our world-class ski resorts are getting ready for another great winter season, and so should you!  Now is the time to check out your winter sports equipment and take advantage of the XC Ski Swap event in Tahoe City, CA, Saturday, November 9, 2024.

What will you find?  How about boots, poles, snowshoes, clothing, accessories, skate and classic, telemark and light touring gear just to name a few items. 

If you haven’t tried out cross country skiing, this is a great way to pick up all of the equipment you’ll need at a fraction of the cost!

Our temperatures have dropped, and before you know we’ll have snow on the ground in Tahoe City!  Our winter sports venues will all be open again, so now is the time to take advantage of this large XC Ski Swap event. 

Need another reason to shop?  This is a fundraiser for the Tahoe XC Ski Education Association so you’re getting a two-for-one by shopping and supporting this local group.

Here are the details of event:

XC Ski Swap – Tahoe City 2023

  • When:  9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024
  • Where:  Tahoe Cross Country Lodge | 925 County Club Drive, Tahoe City, CA 96145
    • Directions:  On Hwy 28 near the 7-Eleven at Dollar Point, take Fabian Way on the north side of the highway, right on Village Road, which has the sign to the entrance to the Highlands neighborhood on the corner, veer to the right then take a left onto Country Club Drive about 3 miles NE from downtown Tahoe City.  The Tahoe XC center will be on your left.  Look for all of the cars!
  • Admission Cost – A $10 donation is suggested.  Just a FYI, they will limit the number of shoppers to twenty-five (25) at any given time, so be patient if you get there and you have to wait to get in!
