Shortest Day of the Year, Saturday, December 21, 2013, Lake Tahoe, CAToday, December 21, 2013 will be the shortest day of the year in Lake Tahoe, California.  Okay it’s the shortest day of the year for everyone even if you’re not here in Lake Tahoe, but it also officially marks the winter solstice and the beginning of the 2013-2014 winter season!

Our local ski resorts are already open, and with snow on the ground, it feels like winter has been here for a while now, but we’re hopeful for more snow and a great winter season here in the Lake Tahoe – Truckee area.

For those of you that long for more sunshine, after today, each day will become just a little bit longer, as we move back towards the longest day of the year, which will be on June 21, 2014.  That’s only 182 days, or 15,724,800 seconds, 4,368 hours, or 262,080 minutes, from today!

In only 78 days it will be time to move your clocks forward one hour, when we move back to Daylight Savings time on Sunday, March 9, 2014!

As I enjoy the shortest day of the year, I’m going to take a few moments and set some personal goals.  This is the perfect time of year to start those New Year’s resolutions, knowing that there is a defined deadline in the near future – target one – Sunday, March 9, 2014 (11 weeks from now) and the Summer Solstice on June 21, 2014 (26 weeks from now).

Is there something you’d like to achieve in the next few months?  Why wait until January 1 to start your New Year’s resolutions when you can start them today!

Until then, our next time change, enjoy the snow in Tahoe and have a great New Year!

Santa’s Party, Granlibakken Ski Resort – Tahoe City, California Come out and have some winter fun with Santa, at Santa’s Party this Saturday, December 14, 2013!  Santa will arrive in style, on his fire truck at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park in Tahoe City tomorrow morning!

The Rotary Club of Tahoe City and the Tahoe City Public Utility District will be hosting its 14th Annual Santa’s Party and it should be a lot of fun for everyone.  All children ages pre-school to 9 years old are invited for a day of free sledding, along with a pancake breakfast and Santa will be handing out gifts.  You may remember this past event as Sledding with Santa, so get ready to have some winter fun!

Santa will make a grand entrance, and the North Tahoe High School Jazz Band will play holiday music, along with Christmas caroling.

In addition to getting to talk with Santa, there will be live music, along with warm drinks and pancakes.

Where: Tahoe City Winter Sports Park (Also known as the Tahoe City Golf Course in the summer),

251 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, California.

When:  Saturday, December 14, 2013 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Truckee Community Christmas, Truckee, California December 2013It’s that time of year, when we are asked as a community to help those in need.  This year the Truckee Community Christmas, a non-profit organization is once again collecting toys, food, and has organized a local coat drive.

You may not realize that the Truckee Community Christmas program helps out low-income families, teen moms and their babies, seniors who are homebound and other deserving residents in the area that just need a little extra help.

There are four different ways you can help out and make a difference in our area through your generous donations.

A Coat Drive in Truckee, California is under way. New and gently used coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and warm sweaters are being collected for those in need. All sizes are wanted: Men, Women, and Children. This is a great opportunity to take a look inside of your closets and give away those coats and sweaters that you no longer wear, or have out grown. It’s a two-for-one. Get organized and help others out that really need assistance.

Coat donations can be made at the Church of the Mountains in downtown Truckee, or at Sierra bible Church on Brockway Road.

Food Collection Barrels have been placed in local grocery stores for non-perishable food items.

New Unwrapped Toys are also being collected, and you can place your donations in any of the collection bins around town at the local banks, real estate offices, schools, HOA clubhouses and businesses around town.

Volunteer The Truckee Community Christmas also needs volunteers.  Giving of your time is also a wonderful gift to give.  To help out visit www.TruckeeCommunityChristmas.com or call 530-587-2757.

Look for the Collection Barrels that have been marked with the Truckee Community Christmas Square Red Logo on them to make your donations.

All items collected will be distributed to local Tahoe needy families through the Truckee Community Christmas project.

Toys for Tots, Sunnyside Resort – Tahoe City, California December 2013Tonight, Friday, December 6, 2013 is the Toys for Tots Sunnyside Resort and United States Marine Corps Reserve Collection Party at the Sunnyside Resort in Tahoe City, California from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage along with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign is officially underway in the North Lake Tahoe area.  Each year the goal is to collect as many toys for local Tahoe children in need.

You’ll find toy collection sites through-out the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area in many local businesses.  You can bring your new, unwrapped toy to one of the four Toys for Tots kick-off parties, or you can drop off your new, unwrapped toys at any of the local businesses, including all Coldwell Banker offices, just look for the Toys for Tots banner in front of local businesses.

The Sunnyside Resort is the second of the four kick-off parties for the Toys for Tots collection parties.  I went last year, and I can tell you it was a lot of fun.

Santa will also be present for photos and handing out candy canes.

Where: Sunnyside Resort, Restaurant & Lodge, 1850 West Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, California. Approximately 2 miles south of the “Y” in Tahoe City on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

When:  Friday, December 6, 2013 –  5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cost:  Bring a new, unwrapped toy for children ages newborn to 17 years

If you can’t make the Sunnyside party, don’t forget that “The Gang” is having Game Night at Rosie’s Café tonight, December 6, 2013 starting at 7 p.m.  Live music by Space Heater begins at 9 pm. (Adults Only).  Bring a new, unwrapped toy to this event and help local Tahoe children and have a fun evening out!

Holiday Tree Lighting – Kings Beach, California December 2013It’s that time of year to light up the holiday tree in Kings Beach, California.  If you’re looking for some holiday fun, check out the annual Holiday Tree lighting event this Friday, December 6, 2013 in downtown Kings Beach, California.

Come out and enjoy a free holiday event in downtown Kings Beach as the community comes out to celebrate the lighting of the Holiday Tree at the North Tahoe Event Center.

Not only will they light the Holiday Tree, but after the outdoor lighting countdown, there will be craft stations, hot coco, homemade soup, and you can get your photo taken with Santa.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by fire truck and then they will light up the holiday tree.

It will be cold tonight, with temperatures dropping down into the teen’s, perhaps single digits, so it is really important to dress warmly as you wait for Santa to arrive and then the tree lighting ceremony!
