Spring Forward – Time Change | Sunday, March 8, 2026

March 6, 2026 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Spring Forward – Time Change | Sunday, March 8, 2026

Despite all of the talk of stopping the two seasonal time changes, we’re still doing them!

It is time to once again to Spring Forward and change your clocks by moving the time forward one hour!

On Sunday, March 8, 2026, you will need to change your clocks by one hour if you live, or are visiting the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area!

Changing our time with that” Spring forward” action will give us longer days, and it begins our march forward to warmer temperatures.

Despite all of the winter snow fun, this is something I look forward to each year!

On Sunday, March 8, 2026 (the change happens on the second Sunday in March), which just happens to be the last day of our local Tahoe SnowFest 2026 celebration, the time on our clocks will change!

You may be asking yourself, what’s the big deal?  How big of an impact does this make on our days here in Tahoe?

Photo is of the West Shore Lake Tahoe - Hurricane Bay, Tahoe City lLake Tahoe beach area covered in snow with the reflection of trees on the lake surface. The sky has turned colors of orange, yellow, and pink. At the bottom of the photo is a copyright mark followed by Laura Allen 530-414-1260 www.TahoeLauraRealEstate.comAn interesting fact about the time change that you may not really appreciate is, the sun will sunset at, or just before  6 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

A sunset before 6 p.m. won’t happen again here in greater Tahoe City area until October 31, 2026 – about 237 days ( almost 8 months), from now.  A nice long stretch of sun filled evenings!

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, sunset will be at 6:04 p.m. Once we spring forward on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the sun will set about an hour later at 7:05 p.m.

On you list of things to do, remember before you go to bed on Saturday night, you’ll need to set any manual clocks ahead one hour!

Since we have the twice a year time – clock changes, here is my list of things additional tasks to do before the Spring Forward day:

  • Change clocks in our home, office, kitchen (microwave and oven), and cars (move forward one hour).  Yes, we still have some manual clocks that do not reset on their own. : )
  • Check smoke alarms It doesn’t hurt to make sure they are all working and replace those that don’t respond.  Since most have multiple-year batteries in them, replace those older alarms, and mark on the device when you replaced it.  Knowing that an alarm was replaced in 2019, is helpful in 2026!  Remember, you should have one alarm in each sleeping area, and one in each common area on each floor.
  • Check all carbon monoxide alarms/detectors Again, just a quick check to make sure they are still working.  You should have at least one carbon monoxide alarm/detector on each floor.  If you can have one in each sleeping area, even better!  If you find yourself falling asleep in a common area, put one in that room too!
  • Fire extinguishers If you don’t have fire extinguishers in your car, in the kitchen, garage, and other places that could benefit from a fire extinguisher, now is the time to get them.

It is also time to check to make sure the ones you have haven’t been moved and/or damaged.  Over the years I have found that this is also a good time to buy and add another one and put it in a room that doesn’t already have one. Buying an additional extinguisher twice a year can help make it easier on your budget.

  • Any security device, or item that uses a battery that doesn’t have a re-charge option and is wireless (security cameras, video doorbells, exterior/interior lights) that need to be changed often.  For the devices that have  an extended period of time on replacing batteries, so now is a good time to check them, and re-charge.
  • All Flashlights (working, extra batteries), candles, matches, lighters, short-term lighting devices. Time to make sure all are still in good working order.
  • Back-up charger device for cell phones/laptops There are a number of extra power devices that can hold a charge for up to a year, but now it a good to check and re-charge them as needed.  Technology continues to improve in this area, so check into getting a solar charging option for those devices.
  • Canned goods/emergency food supplies You never know when you might not be able to go to the store, so if you haven’t checked your emergency food and daily living supplies (emergency food for each member in the house, your pets, bottled water, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning products, etc.), now is the time to check those supplies, rotate old out – new in, and get other supplies on hand.
  • Make sure you have the following:
    • Get a battery-operated radio – Check to make sure the one you have is still working.
    • Get a small TV that can be powered by connecting to just a USB port device that works on an antenna (free tv – news and information in an emergency, or power outage)
    • Get the TV antenna device that will work with a digital TV that can get us the free national channels.  You never know when the cable could go down and you’ll need local news and information.
  • Create a fire evacuation emergency plan.  Have you designated a location outside of the Tahoe Basin – Truckee area that everyone will/can meet at, or someone to call outside of the area to let them know you are alright and where you are at?  This is critical so you can find out if others in your household are also okay..  Having a plan in place before an emergency is critical if you spend any time in our area.
    • Figure out your “grab bags” – items to take with you if you had to leave the area with just a few minutes of notice.  I have put together a list of items throughout our home to take.  Knowing what the item is, and what room it is currently located in can save you a lot of time and give you your best opportunity to get those items in a “must leave” situation.
      • Having your bags partially loaded, along with the “grab and go list” in it, makes you more prepared for that emergency event.  Now is the time to do these critical tasks for that “just in case” emergency moment.

For those who are not as familiar with the Lake Tahoe –  Tahoe City  – Truckee areas, most of our important utility lines (electric, cable, phone) are located above ground, yes, telephone poles, which puts them more at risk for damage.

Several times a year the power will go out for all different types of reasons, so being prepared for a “no power situation” is a must!

We are also located in a high-fire zone.  The reminder to be prepared for a disaster (wildfire) and having everyone in your house-hold familiar with what to do if the worst-case situation should happen is very important, so make your emergency plans now if you haven’t, and if you have those plans, now is the time to review them.

Take advantage of this timely reminder to not only change your clocks, but to do some routine safety checks, along with being proactive on your emergency home preparation plans for that just in case moment!

Upcoming future dates to keep in mind (number of days are from March 8, 2026):

  • Next time Change:  Sunday, November 1, 2026 | 238 days (Fall Back and Gain One Hour)
  • Longest Day of the Year:  Friday, June 21, 2026 – Summer Solstice | 105 days
  • 4th of July | America celebrates 250th year anniversary |  118 days
  • Shortest Day of the Year for 2026 – Monday, December 21, 2026 | 288 days – Winter Solstice

If you haven’t made your plans to be here in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area, now is the time to look at your calendar and figure out your trips for the rest of the year!

If you live in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Tahoe City area, it’s time to move your clocks forward Sunday, March 8, 2026!

Guitar Strings vs Chicken Wings – Olympic Valley – 2025

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, but we still have some great, local, outdoor events that will happen in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area in the months of September and early October!

This evening the Annual Guitar Strings vs Chicken Wings at the Village at Tahoe Palisades will happen today, Friday, September 5, 2025!

If you love chicken wings and live music, you will enjoy being at the Village in Olympic Valley as six (6) restaurants and six (6) bands will face-off in this fun annual competition of sound versus taste!

While you don’t need a reason to come up to the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area, so if you don’t have plans for this evening, this is a fun event for you to enjoy tonight!

Not only will you have some late summer fun, you’ll also benefit the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science.

Six bands will battle for a cash prize and the six (6) restaurants will fight for the bragging right and title to best wings, along with a trophy!

The Bands that are in the competition on Friday night are grouped as follows:

It’s time to celebrate the beginning of the change in our seasons with the annual Guitar Strings vs Chicken Wings competition in Olympic Valley this evening Friday, September  5, 2025.

Lake Tahoe and Olympic Valley  area continues to offer fun activities for everyone to enjoy and our fall season is one of the best times to be in our area.

Our weather is great, but our early evenings will be cool.  I would dress in layers and take a sweater, sweatshirt, or a light jacket so you’ll be comfortable in the shade in Olympic Valley.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and there are a variety of drink and wing packages, along with voting tokens options to purchase!

Music begins at 5 p.m. and the event goes until 9 p.m. at the Village.

Proceeds go to the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, which is a non-profit group that is trying to educate the understanding of the natural history of the Lake Tahoe region.  Last year this event raised almost $5,000 for the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science.

What a great way to support a local group and make a fun evening out of the donation!

Tahoe City Longest Day of the Year June 20, 2025

June 20, 2025 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Tahoe City Longest Day of the Year June 20, 2025

It’s here, the longest day of the year in Tahoe City, California – Friday, June 20, 2025!

It is hard to believe that the longest day of the year has arrived!  Once the day is over, each day will have a little less sunshine until we hit the shortest day of the year, which will happen on Sunday, December 21, 2025!

I love the long, warm, sunshine filled days!  I love summer here in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California area!  It is one of the most beautiful places to enjoy your summer season, and I am grateful to get to have that experience on a daily basis!

The longest day of the year is a reminder that our summer season will not last forever!

The recent heat wave in late May and in June makes me believe that we will have a longer summer season than we did last year.

On a day like today, I’ll make the time to appreciate the bluest of skies, and warmth of the sun.  I’ll take in the smell of sun tan lotion on others as they walk by, and I’ll remember to take in the pure beauty of our mountains and the cool waters of Lake Tahoe!

Sunrise will be at 5:35 a.m. and the sun will set at 8:30 p.m.  By comparison, on the shortest day of the year for 2025, which is just 184 days away, the sunset will be at 4:41 p.m. almost a four (4) hour difference from the longest day of the year in Tahoe City, California today!

For those of you that long for more sunshine, today is your day! After today, we begin the march towards our winter season and the shortest day of the year.

In the Tahoe City area, that means we lose about two (2) minutes a day of sunshine, yes, I’m rounding up, but that’s what we will lose until the shortest day of the year.  Which means, by July 21, 2025, our days will be about one hour shorter on daylight!

If you are keeping track, or you are just curious, from the longest day of the year, today, to the shortest day of the year, here are dates to keep in mind:

  • Only 185 days, or 4,440 hours, or 266,400 minutes, from today to the shortest day of the year – Sunday, December 21, 2025!
  • The 4th of July is only 15 days from today!
  • Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2025, is only 74 days from today!
  • Ready for the next time change to Fall Back and gain an hour? Sunday, November 2, 2025, is just 136 days away.
  • The beginning of a new year, Wednesday, January 1, 2026, at the stroke of midnight is right around the corner at 196 days from today!

The passage of time is real, and the sound of my own personal tick-tock of a clock has never been louder.

While I hope the road in front of me is as long as the road behind me (okay just being long would be good), the reality is, making the most of the time we have, right now, should be a personal goal for everyone!

Now is the time to enjoy your beautiful summer days where ever you are at!

If you haven’t made your plans to be here in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area, now is the time to pick a date, plan an adventure, and make some new magical memories!

Annual Cushing Crossing – Olympic Valley – 2025

April 21, 2025 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Annual Cushing Crossing – Olympic Valley – 2025

Note:  Due to bad weather this event is moved to Saturday, May 10, 2025.

If you are looking for a signal that our Tahoe winter season is coming to an end, look no further than the Annual Cushing Crossing event in Olympic Valley, California!

The second half of March delivered a lot of snow to the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area and now it’s time to end the season and move towards summer!

While the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in Olympic Valley will continue to having skiing through Memorial Day weekend, the 33rd annual Cushing Crossing event will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025!

This annual event is the unofficial signal that the ski season is coming to an end.

This event is fun, and you’ll have some real laughs, along with being impressed at those that will attempt the 33rd Annual Cushing Crossing-Olympic Valley – 2025, on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

I’ve been to this pond skimming event several times and it is one crazy, fun time that everyone enjoys watching.

Skiers and snowboarders ski down the hill, in creative costumes that they have put together, and attempt to skim across Cushing Pond.

This is a contest and participants are awarded for their outrageous costumes, along with how far and well they skim the pond.

There are some great prizes, along with bragging rights, which will bring out the best in those that participate in this event.

Some contestants will make it across the pond in style, while others will crash with a big splash and sink into the pond water.

It’s fun to see how the judges score each participant and who gets big points for costumes, originality, style, and of course how they skimmed the pond, and if they made it across the pond.

While there will be some seating that is already set-up, from past experience, I recommend bringing along your own camping chairs so you are guaranteed to have a seat in a spot where you can see the participants.

Check out the fun from a past event – the Cushing Crossing Event in Olympic Valley with this video (pre-resort name change):
