When Can I have Studded Snow Tires on in Tahoe City, California?

November 21, 2013 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

When Can I have Studded Snow Tires on in Tahoe City, California

When Can I have Studded Snow Tires on in Tahoe City, California? One question I’m often asked as a local Tahoe City REALTOR is when can I have studded snow tires on my car in Tahoe City, California?  It’s a great question, especially once it starts to snow here!

If you’re new to California you may not know that we’re not allowed to have studded snow tires on all year long.

  • California Vehicle Code [Section 27454 (e)] permits studded tires to be used on vehicles between November 1 and April 30 of each year, so those of us who want to have studded snow tires on our cars have to make a tire change twice a year.

We are well into November, and so far it’s been a very mild fall with only one snow storm, but it will snow and your time is running out to get your studded snow tires back on your car.

When Can I have Studded Snow Tires on in Tahoe City, California?Yesterday was the day I changed out my summer tires for my trusty studded snow tires in anticipation of the snowy Tahoe City winter weather to come.  I love having the studded snow tires on my car and I can’t imagine going through a Tahoe City winter without them!

Not everyone knows what to do, or where to go if you want studded snow tires on your car, or you may studded snow tires, but you don’t know where to take them to have them put back on.

I took my car to the local Tahoe City Chevron Station.  They do a great job and they were happy to work me into their schedule.

In addition to changing my tires, they replaced my windshield wipers, checked and refilled both my antifreeze and windshield wiper fluids.  All things that I’ll need to have a safe winter driving season.

If you need a place to get your studded snow tires changed call the Tahoe City Chevron at 530.583.0211 and find out when you can bring your vehicle in.  They are located at the junction of Highway 89 South and Highway 28 in Tahoe City, California.

While most people use the calendar to signal a change in the seasons here in Tahoe City, I mark the change in seasons based on what tires are on my SUV.  When the studded snow tires are on its late Fall-Winter and when they come off I’m ready to welcome in the Tahoe Spring-Summer season!

Studded Snow Tires are allowed in California from November 1 through April 30 each year.

Don’t forget it’s time to put on your studded snow tires today.  Our first big Tahoe City snow storm is right around the corner!

Winter Travel Tips for Tahoe City, California

Winter Travel Tips for Tahoe City, California

Winter Travel Tips for Tahoe City, CaliforniaWinter is still officially a little more than 6 weeks away, but today it sure feels like it has begun up here in the Tahoe City, California area.  Today we received our second significant winter storm.

When I went outside today, at around 3 p.m., I had just over 8 inches of new snow on the ground here on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.  It was more than enough for the snow removal company to come over and clear out our driveway!

If you’ll be coming up to the Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California area over the next few months, here are a few winter travel tips to keep in mind.

1.)   Fuel/Power – Keep you gas tank full, or your electric vehicle fully charged.  Road closures can happen and you can be stuck in your car for several hours.  Winter storms can wipe out power for several days and the local gas stations can’t pump gas without electricity, so keep your gas tank full.

2.)   Food and Winter Clothing – Travel with food, water, toilet paper, and blankets, just in case you get stuck, or have to wait until the road re-opens.  Have a winter jacket, gloves, hat, and winter boots with you.  If you have to get out of your car, you need to be prepared for the harsh winter mountain climate.

3.)   Snow Chains / Studded Snow Tires – Carry snow chains if your vehicle needs them.  Be sure to have extra cash available to pay someone to put them on and off for you if you’re not comfortable putting them on yourself.  If you use studded snow tires, California allows you to have them on your vehicle from November 1 through April 30 each year.  Mine are already on my vehicle!

4.)   Shovel – Travel with a snow, or regular shovel.  If you get stuck, you may be able to dig yourself free with the right equipment.

5.)   Windshield Fluid – Make sure your windshield wiper fluid supply is full.  You’ll need that fluid to keep your windows clear of road spray.

6.)   Antifreeze – Check the current level, just to make sure your vehicle has the right amount of antifreeze in it.

7.)   Slow Down – Slow down when traveling in poor/bad weather conditions.  Just because you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle with studded snow tires does not mean you get to drive like you are on a race track and ignore the current conditions.  Slow it down, and be safe.

Tahoe Real Estate Home Winter Preparation Tips

Tahoe Real Estate Home Winter Preparation Tips

Tahoe Real Estate Winter Preparation TipsOur snow storm in late October was a big reminder that our winter season is right around the corner.  If you haven’t prepared your Tahoe property for winter, now is the time to do it.

So here are ten Tahoe real estate tips to prepare for the upcoming winter season.

1)     Furnace Check-Up.  Now is the time to set-up an appointment for a maintenance check-up.  No time for an appointment?  At least make sure you replace the air filter, or clean it.  Make sure the cold air return is clear of furniture and clean.  Remember to turn your thermostats “on” and set for at least 50 degrees.

2)     Propane Tank Levels.  If your home is heated by propane, check your tank levels and re-fill as necessary.  This is also a good time to make sure there are snow poles in place marking where your tank is located at.

Tahoe Real Estate Winter Preparation Tips - Foundation Vent3)     Foundation Vents. If you remembered to open your foundation vents to air out your craw spaces, now is the time to close them up to prevent pipe freezing later in the season.

4)     Snow Removal Service.  Have you set up your snow removal service for the upcoming 2014-2015 season?  It’s time to get your annual contract.  If you weren’t happy with last years’ snow removal service, now is the time to shop around and line-up someone new.

5)     Snow Shovels.  As you store away the summer seasonal items, now is the time to locate your snow shovels, and re-stock the snow melt.

6)     Outdoor and Indoor Lights.  Check all of your outdoor and indoor lights to make sure they are working.  Replace burned out light bulbs now while access is easy. If lamps are on timers, adjust them so they turn on earlier for the shorter days.

7)     Flashlights.  The winter weather will bring power outages.  Check all flashlights to make sure they are working.   Replace old batteries and place the flashlights where you can easily find them.  If you don’t have a flash light in your car, this is a good time to put one in.

8)     Smoke detectors.  It’s easy to forget to change out the batteries in your smoke detectors, until they start to chirp.  If you know you won’t be in Tahoe for the fall-back time change, replace the batteries in your smoke detectors now and change your timing to when you bring in the deck patio furniture and when you take it out!Tahoe Real Estate Winter Preparation Tips - Carbon Monoxide Alarm

9)     Carbon Monoxide Detectors.  As of July 1, 2011, California state law changed, and all homes should have a carbon monoxide detector on each floor of your home.   If you haven’t installed them, do so now.

10) Vehicle Check.  Make sure you vehicle is ready for winter driving.  It’s time to check your tires, put on your winter (studded tires), replace your windshield wipers, windshield wiper fluid, and antifreeze levels.

It’s time to get your Tahoe home ready for this winter and these Tahoe Real Estate Winter Preparation Tips will help you!

It’s Snowing in Tahoe City!

October 23, 2012 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

It’s Snowing in Tahoe City!

The calendar still reads October, but the view out my front door says it’s anything but fall! The forecast was for 2-4 inches of snow, and at my home, which is on the West Shore of Tahoe City, just down from the Tahoe Park – Sunnyside area, we’ve gotten over 5 inches of snow, if not a little more.

This is great news for those who can’t wait to ski and snow board this year, but early snow in October, seems to always catch us all off-guard.It’s Snowing in Tahoe City!

Early October snow storms can catch Tahoe owners off-guard.  My past clients know I really am a full service Tahoe Real Estate Agent.  They see that during the buying process, but also in the years that follow.

Some of my past client called yesterday and needed to have their homes checked in on.  They wanted to make sure their thermostats were still set at 50 degrees, or higher in anticipation of this early winter storm.

Most Tahoe owners were prepared, but just needed a comfort check on their second homes.  I’m always happy to hear from my past clients, and I’m always here to help out.

This early snow storm is expected to stay in the Tahoe City area for the next few days, so get those snow boots out and get ready for a great winter season.

The forecast for this weekend is sunny and clear, but it will be cold.  Tahoe home owners will get another chance to come up and check on their homes and get them ready for the upcoming winter season.

Be sure to watch for my next post on Winter Preparation Tips for Tahoe Home Owners!

Since today is April 30, my car is at the local Chevron making the seasonal tire change from studded snow tires to regular year-around all-weather tires.  They do a great job at the Tahoe City Chevron and they were happy to work me into their schedule today.
