North Lake Tahoe Best Spring Skiing of the Season | March 17 2018

March 17, 2018 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

North Lake Tahoe Best Spring Skiing of the Season | March 17 2018

North Lake Tahoe Best Spring Skiing of the Season | March 17 2018Today might be St. Patrick’s Day and everyone is wearing green, in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area, we’re surrounded by beautiful white snow!

March is turning out to be a huge snow storm month and creating our best spring skiing conditions of the entire season.

In the past four days the Homewood Ski Resort on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Homewood, California has received 58″ at the base – lake level (that’s almost five feet of new snow).

I live just a few miles north of the resort, and it’s true, we’ve received a lot of snow with the recent storm, but also with the winter storm two weeks ago.

If you’ve been hoping for walk-ways that are lined with high, tunnel-like snow walls, this is your chance to have that experience.

As with all unique experiences (melting snow), we’re moving into our Spring season, (higher day-time temperatures), which means these conditions won’t last long.

There has never been a better time to come up to the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area and enjoy our winter sports venues and activities.

Our local ski resorts, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, sledding/tubing, or just making a snow-person in your back-yard this is the time to do it!

It’s hard to imagine how we get this type of snowfall, and what it is like to wake up each and every morning for 3 or 4 days and finding 1, 2, even 3 feet of new snow. Each day the snow just continues to compress with the weight of the new snow on top of it, which makes the rising snow height even that more impressive!

Want to see how much snow we receive?  Here is progression on how much snow we’ve received:

Sunday, March 11, 2018:

Chairs before snow storms march 11, 2018

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 after the this new series of snow storms began:

First Day after new snow storms began

Friday, March 16, 2018 early morning – chairs would be covered by the end of the day:

Friday, March 16 morning

Saturday, March 17, 2018 noon – chairs are completely buried in snow.  Dig down about a foot and you’ll find the tops of the chairs.  This snow won’t last as our spring temperatures will have a quicker melt-out than in January with frigid temperatures.

Saturday, March 17, 2018 around 12 noonPerhaps I’ll photograph the melt out as we move into April and you can see the chairs reappear!

We probably won’t receive enough snow to bring us up to normal for California snow-pack and water-shed numbers, but this last two storms are going to help raise those numbers!

Our winter fun is far from over.  March is typically one of our largest snow months, and our spring skiing and winter sports are really at their best at this time of year.

If you want to make the North Lake Tahoe your second home destination so you can take advantage of our year-around sports including our world-class skiing, and you don’t want to deal with snow removal, digging out your car, or any of the other details that comes with condo ownership here in our area consider the Resort at Squaw Creek.

Owning a condo-hotel is the perfect combination of hotel services and on-site support with home ownership.  Use your unit exclusively, or take advantage of the on-site vacation rental company and enjoy the best of both worlds – owner use and generating income when you aren’t using your luxury unit.

The Resort at Squaw Creek offers a concierge-style luxury resort experience with valet service, downhill ski-in and ski-out facilities, cross-country skiing, ice skating  along with access to a year-around out-door heated swimming pool, in-ground spa/hot tubs, and in the summer an 18 hole golf course, tennis courts, and shuttle service to the Village at Squaw Valley (no parking frustrations here) making the Resort at Squaw Creek a top choice for luxury Tahoe condo buyers.

North Lake Tahoe Best Spring Skiing of the Season | March 17 2018The Resort offers a Tahoe experience for their owners that focuses on ease of ownership.  As a benefit of being located in a condo-hotel setting you’ll have access to restaurants, bars, shops, professional day spa, and the option for room service (a favorite option of mine that very few developments offer).

Many Tahoe Buyer over-look the Resort at Squaw Creek because of the higher HOA fees.  Do not let the monthly HOA fees scare you off!

In order to make a fair and complete analysis you must a full comparison from one complex to the next by adding in the cost of all utilities (most condo developments are not all inclusive), and the value for a year-around heated outdoor pool and the additional on-site support and service owners have available to them.

The Resort HOA fees include gas, electric (heating and air conditioning), Internet, Cable, water, sewer, garbage, the list goes on and on, so do not assume the fee is high, or out-of-line for our area for similar types of properties.

The monthly HOA fee, when compared to other developments offers a great value for condo/home owners that want to enjoy their second home in a carefree way that other development options do not offer.

Luxury condo buyers need to take into account the value of staff and support, not to mention the luxury vacation resort experience – getting away from the every day stresses and fully enjoying the Squaw Valley and North Lake Tahoe recreational experience.

Looking for a buying opportunity at the Resort at Squaw Creek? Check out this excellent value – 1 bedroom | 1 bathroom condo suite with a separate kitchen – dining – living room area with a fireplace and a good forest view from this unit!

Fresh Powder Snow in Tahoe City | Feb 22 2018

February 22, 2018 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Fresh Powder Snow in Tahoe City | Feb 22 2018

Fresh Powder Snow in Tahoe City | Feb 22 2018Last year we received so much snow that by mid-February reporting new, fresh, powder snow in Tahoe City was old news.

You may not remember that by mid-January 2017 we had received about 70% of our annual snow fall, about 280 inches (average annual snowfall is around 400 inches), in just a couple of weeks – a lot of snow in a very short period of time.

By the time our 2017 winter season was over, we had received over 700 inches of snow – an epic winter for so many reasons.

Fast forward to today, February 22, 2018, and with only a few smaller snow storms so far this year, it has made this winter very mild in comparison, and each new snow storms big news!

It’s exciting to let everyone know that we have received between four (4) to six (6) inches of new snow at the lake level on the West Shore of Tahoe City today, which means our mountain resorts are also getting more snow today!

It is not only welcome news for our skiers and related winter sports; it is also good news for anyone watching our California snow-pack and water-shed numbers!

Our winter fun is far from over.  February and March are often our best months for our winter sports.

Don’t forget the 37th Annual Snowfest! 2018 is set to begin March 1, 2018 and will run through March 11, 2018.  The timing of these recent snow storms over the past two weeks will set the stage for ten days of winter fun in March!

I will have a blog post out next week that will have the complete Snowfest! 2018 calendar and list of events, but here are some of my favorite events:

  • Tahoe City Fireworks – Friday, March 2, 2018 at 7:45 p.m. at Commons Beach in downtown Tahoe City
  • Snowfest Parade – Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. downtown Tahoe City
  • Gar Woods 30th Annual Polar Bear Swim – Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Gar Woods in Carnelian Bay
  • Fireworks at Squaw Valley – Not part of the official Snowfest calendar, but if you’ll be up here, they are having a fireworks show every Saturday this winter season.  In March they will start at 7 p.m. (check their calendar to confirm time) at the Village at Squaw Valley
  • Wine ‘n Ice – 8th Annual Ice Carving Competition at the Truckee River Winery Wednesday, March 7, 2018 – Truckee
  • Bridge Tenders 10th Annual Ribfest – Friday, March 9, 2018 starting at 5 p.m.
  • Kings Beach Parade – Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. downtown Kings Beach
  • River Run’s Snow Sculpture – Sunday, March 11, 2018 starting at 12 noon, junction of Hwy 89S and turn-off to Alpine Meadows

Today’s new snow is just a reminder that our winter season is far from over and Snowfest! is right around the corner.

If you haven’t been up to the greater Tahoe City – Truckee area to enjoy some of our winter fun, now is the time to plan a trip.

More Snow in North Lake Tahoe – Truckee January 18 2017

January 18, 2017 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

More Snow in North Lake Tahoe – Truckee January 18 2017

More Snow in North Lake Tahoe - Truckee January 18 2017If you haven’t heard, the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area has had back-to-back winter storms that continue to come through the area leaving feet, not inches of new snow.

Since my last update  on our giant snow storms that left feet of snow on January 5, 2017, today, just 13 days later on January 18, 2017, it has started to snow , and once again, we’re expecting another 1-2 feet of new snow over-night.

According to the Sierra Sun in their Tahoe skiing: 3-8 feet of snow recorded in four days at upper elevations by Cassandra Walker, on January 13, 2017 she noted three fun facts about our snow fall citing Liesl Kenney/ Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows (Ski Resort), here are the two that I found very impressive:

  • Over the past 45 years Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows January snowfall has averaged 70 inches.  With 177 inches (of snow) in the first 12 days of 2017, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is already at 254% of their January average!
  • The average annual snowfall for Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is 450 inches.  As of January 12, the ski resort is at 63% of average for the entire winter!

It is true the past few drought years have been really tough to get through, but with all of this snow in just a few days reminds us of just how lean those snow years have been.

We are expecting 1-2 feet of new snow tonight!  For those that will be here for the upcoming weekend the snow conditions should be amazing for the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas.  If winter sports are something you enjoy, you’re going to have a fun weekend here!

It’s hard to imagine just how much snow we have here, and how huge these winter snow storms have been in the North Lake Tahoe area until you see it in person.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had such big back-to-back daily snow storms that just kept dumping more, and more, snow in the greater Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, Tahoe Donner, and Northstar areas, but that is exactly what has happened during the first half of January 2017.

Our area is beautiful, cold, and it is an impressive sight to see the tall walls of snow by the roads, and seeing our homes that look like they could only come out of a movie scene!

More Snow in North Lake Tahoe - Truckee January 18 2017To give you an idea of just how much snow we’ve received here in greater Tahoe City – Truckee, North Lake Tahoe area, here are snow totals from some of our popular ski resorts as of today, January 18, 2017:

Homewood Ski Resort – Homewood, CA – The snow base is at 52″ with the upper mountain at 108″ (I live about 4 miles from the base of the ski resort on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, so I know they have amazing conditions!).

Northstar Ski Resort – Truckee, CA – Base is at 66” with a season total of 277″!

Alpine Meadows Ski Resort – Alpine Meadows, CA and Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley –   Base at 83″ and the summit is at 132″!

Tahoe Donner Ski Resort, Truckee, CA – Base of 100″-120″(that’s 10 feet of snow)!

These winter snow storms continue to make our roads very slick and dangerous so be sure to check with CalTrans , or NVRoads, depending on if you are staying in California, or headed over to Nevada for current road conditions.

The power outages that we experienced last week seem to be behind us with just about everyone back on-line.  As we gear up for the next round of snow storms, now is the time to re-check your emergency kits, re-stock, or add those extra items that you could have used during the last power outage to your emergency supplies.

Take a look just how beautiful the West Shore of Tahoe City is after a mega snow storm!

North Lake Tahoe received over 7 feet of new snow January 5 2017

January 5, 2017 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

North Lake Tahoe received over 7 feet of new snow January 5 2017

North Lake Tahoe received over 7 feet of new snow January 5 2017We had snow for the holidays and for those that made their holiday plans to be here in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee area were rewarded with snow on the ground, skiing, skating, and so much more!

On January 1, 2017 it started to snow.  Fast forward five days later, and I’m still digging out!  To say this was a huge winter snow storm in North Lake Tahoe today, January 5, 2017 is an understatement.

North Lake Tahoe received over 7 feet of new snow over the past 5 days!  It’s been a long time since we’ve had such big back-to-back daily snow storms that just kept dumping more, and more, snow in the greater Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, Tahoe Donner, and Northstar areas, but that is exactly what has happened over the past five days.

Each day I’ve have been greeted with 6”, 8”, or, 1-2 feet of new snow.  Beautiful, cold, and a lot of work to shovel snow the walk-ways, stairs, and thank goodness for our professional snow removal service for the parking areas!

To give you an idea of just how much snow we’ve received here in greater Tahoe City – Truckee, North Lake Tahoe area, here are snow totals from some of our popular ski resorts:

Homewood Ski Resort – Homewood, CA – over 7 feet (84 inches)of new snow over that past 5 days! This morning they reported over 10” at the base (I live about 4 miles from the base of the ski resort on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, so I know this is true!) and 18” of new snow at the top.

Northstar Ski Resort – Truckee, CA – over 67” (almost 6 feet) of new snow in the past 72 hours, 47” in the past 48 hours and 29” in the past 24 hours!

Alpine Meadows Ski Resort – Alpine Meadows, CA and Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley –   84 inches (over 7 feet) of new snow in the past 7 days, 31” in the past 24 hours!

Tahoe Donner Ski Resort, Truckee, CA – now has a base of 42”!

The winter snow storm yesterday was so bad that late in the afternoon I-80 between Reno and Auburn was shut down.  No traffic!

That’s a big deal to stop all traffic going in both directions.  It was a smart move by both CalTrans and NVRoads, both government agencies that maintain and over-see road travel between the two states on this major Interstate 80, called it a no travel zone.  It was icy, snowy, and just plain unsafe to be out there on the roads yesterday evening and night.

Today we finally saw the blue sky, and it was truly a beautiful sight to see the trees, homes, and area covered in deep snow.

Driving down the plowed road today was unreal knowing that less than a week ago this was just a few inches.  It’s a narrow snow corridor with the deep snow piles on both sides of the road.  Take a look just how beautiful the West Shore of Tahoe City is after a mega snow storm!

North Lake Tahoe received over 7 feet of new snow January 5 2017
As I look at the weather forecast it looks like we’re going to have more winter storms for the new two weeks, snow, snow and more snow on the way!

If you love to ski, cross-country ski, snowboard, snowshoe, snowmobile, ice skate, or just love to play in the snow, now is the time to plan your winter trip to greater Truckee, Tahoe City, and North Lake Tahoe area!

It’s a new year – 2017!  Come up and take advantage of 7 feet of new snow that the North Lake Tahoe received over the past few days!
