SnowFest 2024 – North Lake Tahoe

February 26, 2024 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

SnowFest 2024 – North Lake Tahoe

SnowFest 2023 - North Lake Tahoe

It’s that time of year!  Get ready for the Annual SnowFest 2024 North Lake Tahoe Snow Festival !

This year SnowFest 2024 will start on Thursday, February 29, 2024, and end on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Ten days of winter fun in the North Lake Tahoe area!

Snow festival event planners and volunteers work all year long to make this winter experience one of the very best!

While I struggle to believe that another year has zipped by, it’s even harder to believe that this is the 42 Annual Event!

Yes, this event has been around since the spring of 1982 and is still going strong  over forty-two years later in 2024!

While the North Lake Tahoe SnowFest event has become one of the largest winter carnival events in the western United States I think one of its best features is how they combine fun events and activies with local fund-raisers for our organizations that do so much for our community.

Tahoe City Fireworks

I am a big fan of this local North Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California event, and I hope you get the chance to come up and enjoy some local Tahoe fun too!

In my opinion, and I know I’m not impartial on this one, but I believe this is the very best of small-town living!

I also think this is why the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area is a top second home market and visitor destination!

If you haven’t been to any of the North Lake Tahoe Snowfest events in the past, now is the time to make plans to be here!

Free Hazardous Trash Waste North Lake Tahoe – Truckee | 2024

February 16, 2024 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Free Hazardous Trash Waste North Lake Tahoe – Truckee | 2024

Do you have old  cleaners, medications, pesticides, oil filters, paint, auto fludis, batteries, or other questional items stored in your North Lake Tahoe – Truckee home?

Thinking of selling and getting your place ready to sell and have some of these items around your property that you’ll need to get rid of?

Did you know that for several years in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area we have a FREE hazardous Waste Drop-Off event every third (3rd) Saturday of each month, and this program will continue all year long in 2024!

If you have cans of paint (latex and/or oil based), stain, or varnish stored in your North Lake Tahoe – Truckee home, condo, or business that you’d like to throw away they will take those items.

If you miss the third Saturday of each month, remember that Mountain Hardward Stores in Truckee, will take up to five (5) gallons each day from you, so you have more than one option to get rid of old paint products in our area!

In our home, our cabinets are filled with old, mostly empty cleaning product bottles/containers.

I’m always finding old medications, along with over-the-counter medications that we just don’t use any more.  We also have a number of old dog medications.

Like many people, I’ve held onto the item because there is just enough in there to not toss it in the garbage, but they quickly become old, so I always seem to have items to get rid of.

At some point, you know you just need to purge and get rid of the left-over cleaning products and other unwanted items.

You know you shouldn’t just put the items with left-over product in the everyday trash bin, so after a while you’ve accumulated a dozen cleaning containers with just a small amount of product in each one.

How do you get rid of hazardous trash-waste in the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area, and do it responsibly?

Our local agencies make it easy for us to get rid of this toxic trash and to do it the right way.

On the third Saturday of each month the Materials Recovery Facility at 900 Cabin Creek Road (located off Highway 89 S) will take in a number of different types of toxic waste items – for FREE!

All you have to do is call ahead at 530.583.7800 for an appointment to drop your items off.  Sometimes they offer additional dates, you never know until you call.

What will they take?

  • Paint  – Don’t want to go to the dump, or be limited to the third Saturday of each month?
    • Did you know that Mountain Hardware in Truckee will take up to 5 gallons (1 – five gallon container, or 5 one gallon containers) each day (any day they are open) from you for FREE!

This paint is sorted and if it can be used it is donated.  Otherwise it is dumped into a huge mixer and the paint comes out a grayish color that the State of California uses on their buildings and other items that need to be painted.  A cool way to recycle and get rid of old paint!

  • Cleaners
  • Auto Fluids
  • Oil Filters

Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley New Year’s Eve 2023

December 31, 2023 By Laura Allen, Broker Associate, Tahoe Real Estate Agent, CA RE 01473598 | 530-414-1260

Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley New Year’s Eve 2023

There a lot of fun places to spend New Year’s Eve, and here in the greater North Lake  Tahoe – Truckee area on Sunday, December 31, 2023 this will be one of them!

If you are looking for some ways to celebrate and bring in the New Year, check out what is going on at the Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley area this year!

Enjoy their Torchlight (LED) Parade, live music on the KT Deck, followed by their annual fireworks show and an East Coast Baloon Drop at 9 p.m.!

Here is the schedule of the Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley New Year’s Eve event:

New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show – Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort

  • 5 p.m. New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade (Must have pre-registered and purchased tickets to be in the parade) Any view of the ski slope will allow you to see this parade coming down the hill.
  • 7 p.m.  Fireworks Show |  The fireworks will start once the light parade is done.  If you have a view of the ski slope you’ll be able to see the light parade and fireworks show.  That means even from the parking lot, you’ll be able to see the show.  Personally I recommend being in the KT Deck to hear the live music and watch the action!
  • 9 p.m. East Coast Balloon Drop – KT Deck
  • Parking – Parking at the Village may have new rules in place, so check this out ahead of time and give yourself plenty of time to park and walk into the event.
  • Conditions and Weather Permitting
  • Where:  Palisades Tahoe Village Ski Resort | 1960 Olympic Valley Road, Olympic Valley, CA

A few tips if you’re headed to any of our outdoor events:

  • Dress Warmly – You’ll want to dress warmly and in layers as you’ll be outside and the weather for New Year’s Eve is expected to be in the mid-’20s!
  • Be Early – Parking is always a challenge during our holidays/ski season, and during the Christmas – New Year’s holiday period, we’re at capacity, so allow enough time for parking and finding a good spot to watch the show!  If you are taking the bus, check out the schedules and go for the earlier route.  Events tend to start on time in Tahoe, so give yourself extra travel time and plan to be early.
  • Flashlight – Not every place has outdoor lighting at night in our area. Always bring along a small flashlight.  Don’t count on your cell phone flashlight.  You know you’ll take a lot of photos at the event, and that always drains the battery faster, so carry a real flashlight and make it easy to find your way back to the place you are staying at, to your car, or to the bus stop.

There are a few  ways to enjoy any of our outdoor New Year Eve events:

The first is to park and join the other attendees, and enjoy being outdoor, do some people watching, dance to the free music and entertainment before and during the light parade, followed by cheering for the fireworks show.

Or, you can take a short-cut,  and just watch the light parades and fireworks show from any place that has a view of the ski runs.

If you see groups out in the parking lot with their camping chairs and blankets by their cars, chances are I’m one of them (yes, I’m that old lady), waiting for the show to begin.

We do miss the people watching, and the enjoyment that comes from dancing,  live music, and crowds, but the trade-off for us is an easy-in and easy-out and we can bring Finn, our Irish Wolfhound dog with us!

We’ve been watching the firework shows from our car for a few years now and we’ve found a good spot in the parking lot (typically at the very back), or anywhere you can see the ski resorts to watch the show.

Regardless of where you watch the light parade and firework shows, you’ll have a good time!

Looking for some more North Lake Tahoe – Truckee New Year Eve 2023 event options:

  • 5 p.m. Palisades Tahoe – Olympic Valley | LED Torchlight Parade at 5 p.m. followed by fireworks and at 9 p.m. East Coast Balloon Drop
  • 6:15 p.m. Tahoe Donner Downhill – Truckee |  Glow Stick Parade followed by the annual fireworks show immediately after the parade!
  • 7 – 10 p.m. Northstar California – Truckee  | A live band, and festivities in the Northstar Village with a drone show at 9 p.m.

Looking for something more traditional?  There are a number of local restaurants and bars in the area that will also be having special New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re looking for free entertainment these three events are an easy and fun way to bring in the new year!

Remember if you drink, don’t drive.  Check out the Tahoe area bus system  for their expanded night service for a safe ride home.

See you at one of the North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area New Year’s Eve celebrations on December 31, 2023!

Be safe!  Have fun! Happy New Year Everyone!

In my opinion, our holidays (winter and summer) here in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area are the best!  It’s just one of the many reasons we love living here!
