Time Change – Fall Back Sunday November 3, 2019
It’s that time of year to re-set our clocks here in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area!
Many may remember that the voters of the state of California passed the ability to stay on Daylight Savings time in 2018, but the State Legislature has not taken up a bill to make that happen, so we once again change our clocks.
Tomorrow, on Sunday, November 3, 2019 you will need to set your clocks back one hour at 2 a.m., or tonight before you go to bed.
As the old saying goes “Fall Back” (gain an hour) and in the Spring, “Spring forward (lose an hour).
It’s hard to believe that it’s November, and it’s that time of year to change our clocks and gain that extra hour of time sleep.
If you live, or have a home in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee, California area you will need to change your clocks on either Saturday evening before you go to bed, or first thing on Sunday morning.
Are you ready for the semi-annual time change – Fall Back Sunday, November 3, 2019?
Here’s my list of things to do this weekend:
- Change our traditional and digital clocks in our home, office and cars (turn back one hour).
- Check and/or Replace our older smoke alarms. Now that battery life is measured in years, it is important to test and check all smoke alarms to make sure they are still working. It is recommended that you have a smoke alarm in each bedroom, and outside in the hall, along with having at least one on each floor.
- Check all carbon monoxide alarms/detectors to make sure they are still working. While you are only required to have a carbon monoxide alarm on each floor, I’ve been adding a new carbon monoxide alarm to each room in our home.
- Fire extinguishers (check to make sure they haven’t been moved and/or damaged). I’ve also starting buying a new extinguishers to put in different locations in our home.
- Any security device or item that uses a battery and is wireless (security cameras, video door bells, exterior/interior lights), yes, it is time to check them.
- All Flashlights (working, extra batteries), candles, matches, lighters, short-term lighting devices. I just purchased new flashlights so that I can have multiple flashlights in more than one location in a room. Recent power outages remind you that the power can go out at any time, so it helps to be prepared.
- Back-up charger device for cell phones/lap tops (if they have a solar option for re-charging that’s always a bonus)
- Canned goods/emergency food supplies (we’ve been pretty good about rotating our inventory, but it’s time to have more items on hand as we move into our winter season)
- Photos | New on my list this year is to take photographs of the home, property, contents in closets, kitchen, etc… so we’ll have evidence on the condition and contents for our insurance company, just in case something happens.
- Evacuation plan | We live within a high wildfire area. You may live some place else that has other potential hazards that could happen, so if you haven’t mapped out several ways out of your area, now is the time to do so.
- Have you established a meet-up location outside of the area?
- Have you identified a friend/family member that lives outside of the area that everyone can call and check-in with once they are in a safe place?
- Taking a few minutes now to make sure your household has an emergency plan, and you know what to do once you are in a safe place, can provide peace of mind later knowing that everyone is safe and it will allow you to work on the next steps of reuniting.
Now is the time to make sure you are organized and ready for the next season, or challenge in life!
Take advantage of this timely reminder to not only change your clocks, but to keep do some routine safety checks, along with taking care of your final fall/winter home preparation!
