You’ve seen the romantic comedy movies that always seem to have them watch a movie in the park.  So are you ready to experience an outdoor movie on the edge of Lake Tahoe?  

If you’ll be in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area on any Wednesday between June 26 through August 14, 2024, check out Commons Beach in Downtown Tahoe City at dusk for an amazing outdoor movie experience! 

This is a local summer favorite and should be on your bucket list of summer things to do in Tahoe! 

The opportunities to have this type of experience are limited.  It is your chance to be outside and watch the Alpenglow cover Lake Tahoe at dusk and then spend a couple of hours watching a movie on the big blow-up screen. 

If you haven’t been to an outdoor movie recently in a park, or in our case, one set on the beach on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, put this event on your summer list of things to do this year!

New this year – Waterfront Wednesdays.  This year there will be all day fun starting at 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Commons Beach.

There will be local food, artisans, and the days will end with a fun night under the stars with a movie on the beach.

All of the Wednesday night Tahoe City movies on the beach and they will begin at dusk at Commons Beach in downtown Tahoe City,   

You’ll find that all of the movies are either PG or PG-13.  If you want to get their early, the fun starts at 7 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk (check your phone weather app to find out when dusk is on the night you’ll be going).

Here are some Suggested Movie Going Tips:

Movie Attendees are encouraged to bring the following:

  • Chairs Only low back chairs are allowed. However, if you bring a high back chair (I get it, not everyone can easily get up and down into a low-backed beach chair these days, I’m one of them) you will have to sit on the side, or in the back of the viewing area.
  • Bring sleeping bags/beach towels (small plastic tarp to put under them) if you’ll be on the ground.  Remember the ground most likely will be damp, so make sure you have the right things to put down on the ground for an enjoyable evening.
  • Bring blankets and jackets (our summer evening and nights will become cool and if a breeze comes up off the lake, things will really cool down fast).
  • The fun is starting at 12 noon with Waterfront Wednesdays, but the if you can only do the movie, things start around 7 p.m.   If you arrive early you can watch them set up the movie screen. You’ll get some people watching time in along with seeing the incredible Alpenglow over Lake Tahoe!
  • Snacks There are food truck/concession sales, but you are allowed to bring your own snacks, so if you’re on a diet, you can still stay on track and enjoy the movie.  It’s nice to support the local vendors, but you have some options.
  • Movies begin at dusk.  (Check your weather app on your phone for the time dusk will begin for the date you are going to attend, as dusk is earlier the later we go into the summer season)
  • Bring a flashlight so you can make sure you’ve packed everything up and have an easy walk back to your car with light when the movie is over.

Come out and enjoy a beautiful summer evening in Tahoe City out underneath the stars and watch a free movie on the beaches of Lake Tahoe this year!

Summer Outdoor Movie Schedule Squaw Valley 2018Squaw Valley may be known for it’s world-class skiing, snowboarding, and winter sports, but summer-time is just as much fun to be in Olympic Valley and the greater Lake Tahoe area.  

On Thursday nights in July and August you’ll want to check out one of their FREE outdoor Summer movies at the Village at Squaw Valley.

The free outdoor movies are presented in the Events Plaza at the Village at Squaw Valley and a new movie is presented each week. All movies begin around 8:30 p.m. (dusk) weather permitting.

Summer Outdoor Movie Schedule Squaw Valley 2018

Movie goers are encouraged to:

  • Dress in layers and wear warmer clothing – sweaters and jackets are highly recommended.
  • Bring a blanket.  Summer evenings are cool in Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe!
  • Arrive early to get a good seat.  The movie begins at 8:30 p.m. (Dusk)
  • Bring a small flashlight so you can look around your chair after the movie, or in your snack bag during the movie.
  • Food and Beverages will be available for sale from local vendors
  • Chairs are provided, but if you have a camping chair you prefer (not everyone is comfortable the plastic Adirondack Chairs), bring it along and you can set it up on the outer edges, or back of the viewing area.

Last year we made an evening out of several free events.  We started at the Truckee Thursdays event.  We walked and looked at the different vendors that were lined up on the street.

We  then made our way over to the food vendor area and we had something to eat from one of the food trucks.  I had to have one of those large lemonade drinks, and then we stopped and listened to the music on Main Street by the beer garden.

Since we had started early we were able to head out around 8 and make the free outdoor movie at the Village at Squaw Valley.  We had a great summer evening out, and we were home before 11 p.m.!

Summer Movies on the Beach Tahoe City 2018 ScheduleIf you’ll be in the greater North Lake Tahoe – Truckee area on any Wednesday between June 27 through August 22, 2018, you’ll want to want to experience one of the free summer movies on the beach in Downtown Tahoe City, California.

If you were a fan of the idea of the outdoor drive-in movies (yes, I know I’ve just dated myself), or you wish you could have had that experience growing up, the outdoor summer movie series at Commons Beach can give you a similar experience and something far more enjoyable.

It is hard to put into words how of just how pleasing it is to be outside and watching the Alpenglow cover Lake Tahoe at dusk and how it will make you feel. 

There is a certain child-like magic that you will feel as you watch the lake turn a golden pink and purple, followed by seeing a movie on the water’s edge of Lake Tahoe once it is dark enough for the movie to start.

If you haven’t been to an outdoor movie recently, or one set on the beach in Lake Tahoe, put this one your summer list of things to do.

Wednesday night movies in Tahoe City are a free (I’m reading that they are asking for a $1 donation per person – looks voluntary – just an FYI), fun thing to do during the summer in greater North Lake Tahoe area!

The Tahoe City movies will begin at dusk on the beach and all movies will be at Commons Beach in downtown Tahoe City this year.  All of the movies are either PG or PG-13 and if you want a sweet treat Cheri’s Hand-Dipped Ice cream will be on site.  The fun starts at 7 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk.
